    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride
    1-3  in recognizing Chief Justice Paul Nye for his many years of loyal
    1-4  service in the judicial system of Texas; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Paul Nye began his legal career as a trial
    1-6  attorney who practiced both plaintiff and defense cases and
    1-7  was admitted to all state courts as well as the United States
    1-8  Supreme Court; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, He embarked on his distinguished judicial career
   1-10  in 1963 when he accepted an appointment as one of the first
   1-11  associate justices of the 13th Court of Appeals in Corpus Christi;
   1-12  and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Talented and well experienced in the Texas judicial
   1-14  process, he was elected Chief Justice in 1971, a position he held
   1-15  until his recent retirement in 1993; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, As Chief Justice, Judge Nye participated in more
   1-17  than 3,790 cases and authored more than 1,735 written opinions
   1-18  covering practically every area of Texas law; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, A well-known and influential leader in the
   1-20  judicial system and in his community, Chief Justice Nye was
   1-21  chairman of the judicial section of the State Bar of Texas,
   1-22  the founding chairperson of the Texas Justices of Courts of Appeal,
   1-23  and the first director of the Board of Council of Chief Judges of
    2-1  Courts of Appeal; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Throughout his years in the judicial system,
    2-3  Paul Nye has been a compassionate, fair-minded, and impartial
    2-4  judge who was committed to upholding the best of legal traditions;
    2-5  and
    2-6        WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman, Judge Nye is admired and
    2-7  respected by his colleagues and the people of the legal community,
    2-8  and his presence on the court of appeals will be greatly missed; it
    2-9  is heartening to know that he will remain active in appellate work
   2-10  by serving Of Counsel to the law firm of Chaves, Gonzales and
   2-11  Rodriguez in Corpus Christi and Harlingen, Texas; now, therefore,
   2-12  be it
   2-13        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-14  73rd Legislature, hereby express appreciation to Chief Justice
   2-15  Paul Nye for his invaluable contributions to our state and extend
   2-16  best wishes to him for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further
   2-17        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-18  him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
