By: Shelley, Parker, Ellis S.R. No. 1033 Henderson, Patterson Whitmire, Brown 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-3 recognizing Dr. Joseph T. Painter who will be installed as the 1-4 148th president of the American Medical Association on 1-5 June 16, 1993; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Dr. Painter is a lifelong Texan and widely 1-7 respected physician whose contributions to improving the health of 1-8 all citizens of our state are greatly admired; and 1-9 WHEREAS, An alumnus of The University of Texas at Austin and 1-10 The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Dr. Painter 1-11 was honored with the Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumni Award; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Dr. Painter has continued the legacy of excellence 1-13 of his father, Dr. T. S. Painter, who was a distinguished member of 1-14 the faculty and president of The University of Texas; and 1-15 WHEREAS, He is a professor of internal medicine at 1-16 The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and a clinical 1-17 associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine; and 1-18 WHEREAS, A nationally recognized authority on cancer control, 1-19 Dr. Painter joined The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer 1-20 Center faculty in 1975 and has served as its vice-president for 1-21 Health Policy; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Dr. Painter has worked diligently to develop 1-23 cooperative programs between M. D. Anderson faculty members and 2-1 physicians throughout Texas so that cancer patients can receive 2-2 screening, treatment, and prevention programs in their home 2-3 communities; and 2-4 WHEREAS, A talented and dedicated physician, Dr. Painter was 2-5 a founding member of the Texas Cancer Council and has provided many 2-6 years of service to the Texas Medical Association, the American 2-7 Medical Association, and other professional organizations; and 2-8 WHEREAS, His extensive services on behalf of the American 2-9 Medical Association include serving as a member of the Board of 2-10 Trustees since 1984 and as chair of the board since 1990; he has 2-11 been an American Medical Association Commissioner to the Joint 2-12 Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and served 2-13 as chair of the American Medical Association Commissioners; and 2-14 WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman and an outstanding professor 2-15 of medicine, Dr. Painter has provided exceptional leadership at 2-16 The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and in his 2-17 positions with the American Medical Association and his election as 2-18 president of the association is well deserved; now, therefore, be it 2-19 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-20 73rd Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Joseph T.
