    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                       Dr. William Curry Holden
    1-5        WHEREAS, The family and many friends of
    1-6  Dr. William Curry Holden mourn the loss of this distinguished
    1-7  historian on April 21, 1993; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Dr. Holden was a well-known archaeologist,
    1-9  historian, author, school administrator, and museum director;
   1-10  and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Born in Limestone County, Dr. Holden graduated
   1-12  from Rotan High School and received his doctorate in 1928 from
   1-13  The University of Texas; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Dr. Holden joined Texas Tech University in 1929
   1-15  as a history professor and also taught sociology and anthropology;
   1-16  and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Dr. Holden established anthropology studies at
   1-18  Texas Tech University, and in 1930 he began to lead study and
   1-19  excavation groups into Mexico, New Mexico, and Texas; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, He led expeditions to study the Yacqui Indians in
   1-21  Sonora, Mexico, and took Texas Tech University's first archaeology
   1-22  field school to Mexico City in 1934; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, The renowned educator supervised excavations at the
    2-1  famous Lubbock Lake Site, and, in 1929, took the lead in creating
    2-2  a regional museum; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, Dr. Holden was a member of numerous professional
    2-4  organizations, including the Texas Institute of Letters, Texas
    2-5  Antiquities Commission, Philosophical Society of Texas, Texas
    2-6  Archaeological Society, Texas State Historical Association, and
    2-7  the American Association of Museums; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, This renowned scientist had many honors to his
    2-9  credit and was listed in Who's Who in America, American Men
   2-10  of Science, The Author's and Writer's Who's Who, Dictionary
   2-11  of International Biography, and International Dictionary of
   2-12  Anthropologists; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, Dr. Holden considered his greatest achievements
   2-14  to be the Lubbock Lake Landmark, the Southwest Collection, the
   2-15  Texas Tech Museum, the Ranching Heritage Center, and the
   2-16  establishment of the graduate studies programs at Texas Tech
   2-17  University; he combined vision, talent, energy, and dedication
   2-18  to make his dreams come true; now, therefore, be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-20  73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
   2-21  members of his family:  his wife, Frances Holden; his daughter,
   2-22  Jane Holden Kelley; his brother, Tom Holden; and his three
   2-23  grandchildren; and, be it further
   2-24        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-25  the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
    3-1  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
    3-2  day, it do so in memory of Dr. William Curry Holden.
