No. 1052 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure 1-3 in recognizing Rebecca Lockwood who recently was selected as one 1-4 of 10 finalists and one of two winners of the 36th annual 1-5 San Antonio Express-News Outstanding Teen Contest; and 1-6 WHEREAS, As a winner, Rebecca will be awarded a $500 1-7 scholarship before attending college and will be honored with 1-8 a plaque at an annual awards ceremony; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The San Antonio Express-News designed the 1-10 Outstanding Teen Contest in 1957 and has continued the tradition 1-11 of honoring 10 high school seniors who represent the highest 1-12 standards of citizenship; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Candidates are selected for demonstrating 1-14 excellence in a variety of fields and for demonstrating character 1-15 and versatility; included in the criteria are consistency in 1-16 academic achievement, leadership ability, participation in 1-17 extracurricular school activities, community service, and other 1-18 exceptional qualities; and 1-19 WHEREAS, A senior at Taft High School, Rebecca is an 1-20 outstanding student who blazed new trails in her independent study 1-21 program; she developed a video and guidebook of sign language for 1-22 camp counselors for special-needs children; the materials she 1-23 created have been accepted by the Girl Scouts of America for 2-1 distribution throughout Texas; and 2-2 WHEREAS, She has worked diligently for the Children's 2-3 Association for Maximum Potential and describes that experience 2-4 as inspirational and uplifting and as having taught her to 2-5 become more independent and responsible; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Highly talented and intelligent, Rebecca is a 2-7 member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the 2-8 English and Spanish honor societies; she is the poetry editor of 2-9 the Taft High School literary journal, Vox Populi; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Rebecca is a young woman of integrity, 2-11 sensitivity, and maturity, and throughout her years in school, 2-12 she has consistently manifested concern for others and an avid 2-13 interest in the betterment of her community; and 2-14 WHEREAS, She plans to attend The University of Texas at 2-15 Dallas and to create her own major in deaf education; now, 2-16 therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 73rd Legislature, hereby commend Rebecca Lockwood for her 2-19 exceptional accomplishments and extend congratulations to her 2-20 for winning this year's Outstanding Teen Contest; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-22 her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-23 _____________________________________ 2-24 President of the Senate 2-25 I hereby certify that the 3-1 above Resolution was adopted by 3-2 the Senate on May 25, 1993. 3-3 _____________________________________ 3-4 Secretary of the Senate 3-5 _____________________________________ 3-6 Member, Texas Senate
