By: Luna S.R. No. 1053 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in 1-3 recognizing Andrew J. Flores who recently was selected as one of 1-4 10 finalists and one of two winners of the 36th annual 1-5 San Antonio Express-News Outstanding Teen Contest; and 1-6 WHEREAS, As a winner of the contest, Andrew will be awarded a 1-7 $500 scholarship before attending college and will be honored with 1-8 a plaque at an annual awards ceremony; he was nominated by his 1-9 school counselor, Jim Retzloff; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The San Antonio Express-News designed the 1-11 Outstanding Teen Contest in 1957 and has continued the tradition 1-12 of honoring 10 high school seniors who represent the highest 1-13 standards of citizenship; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Candidates are selected for demonstrating 1-15 excellence in a variety of fields and for demonstrating character 1-16 and well-rounded personalities; included in the criteria are 1-17 consistency in academic achievement, leadership ability, 1-18 participation in extracurricular school activities, community 1-19 service, and other exceptional qualities; and 1-20 WHEREAS, A senior at South San Antonio High School West 1-21 Campus, Andrew is valedictorian of his class and an outstanding 1-22 student leader; and 1-23 WHEREAS, He has a grade-point average of 100.44, has served 2-1 as class president and treasurer, and has excelled in debating; he 2-2 also writes a column for the school newspaper and stars on the 2-3 varsity baseball team; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Andrew began taking leadership roles during his 2-5 freshman year when he volunteered to work as a counselor for the 2-6 Children's Association for Maximum Potential, a camp for mentally 2-7 retarded and physically handicapped children; he was also 2-8 influenced significantly by an international exchange program 2-9 which enabled him to live with a Japanese family for six weeks; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Andrew is a young man of integrity, sensitivity, and 2-11 maturity, and throughout his years in school, he has consistently 2-12 manifested concern for others and an avid interest in the betterment 2-13 of his community; and 2-14 WHEREAS, Andrew is interested in a biomedical engineering 2-15 career and will attend Carnegie Mellon University in the fall; now, 2-16 therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 73rd Legislature, hereby commend Andrew Flores for his exceptional 2-19 accomplishments and extend congratulations to him for winning this 2-20 year's Outstanding Teen Contest; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him 2-22 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-23 _____________________________________ 2-24 President of the Senate 2-25 I hereby certify that the 3-1 above Resolution was adopted by 3-2 the Senate on May 25, 1993. 3-3 _____________________________________ 3-4 Secretary of the Senate 3-5 _____________________________________ 3-6 Member, Texas Senate
