No. 1054 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure 1-3 in recognizing Melanie Simmons who was recently selected as one 1-4 of 10 finalists in the 36th annual San Antonio Express-News 1-5 Outstanding Teen Contest; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The San Antonio Express-News designed the 1-7 Outstanding Teen Contest in 1957 and has continued the tradition 1-8 of honoring 10 high school seniors who represent the highest 1-9 standards of citizenship; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Candidates are selected for demonstrating 1-11 excellence in a variety of fields and for demonstrating character 1-12 and versatility; included in the criteria are consistency in 1-13 academic achievement, leadership ability, participation in 1-14 extracurricular school activities, community service, and other 1-15 exceptional qualities; and 1-16 WHEREAS, A senior at Lytle High School, Melanie is 1-17 valedictorian of her class and was recognized in 1992 by the 1-18 Lytle Chamber of Commerce as Lytle's Most Outstanding Teenage Girl 1-19 of the Year; she is a member of the National Honor Society, serving 1-20 as its vice-president and treasurer; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Melanie is well known as the driving force and 1-22 inspiration behind Project Santa; the project provides gifts of 1-23 food, toys, and clothing on Christmas Eve to area residents in 2-1 need; in 1992, 168 children received presents; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Talented and interested in the performing arts, 2-3 Melanie received first place in competition at the University 2-4 Interscholastic League district level in poetry interpretation all 2-5 four years in high school; every year she has been named to the 2-6 district all-star cast in University Interscholastic League One 2-7 Act Play Competition and she was honored as Best Actress at the 2-8 District level; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Melanie is a young woman of integrity, strength, 2-10 and generosity who has a love of learning and challenge and who has 2-11 consistently manifested an avid interest in the betterment of her 2-12 community; and 2-13 WHEREAS, Active in Future Farmers of America, she 2-14 received the Chapter Farmer Award for her sheep; she plans to 2-15 attend Texas A&M University this year; now, therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-17 73rd Legislature, hereby commend Melanie Simmons for her exceptional 2-18 accomplishments and extend congratulations to her for earning the 2-19 position of finalist in this year's Outstanding Teen Contest; and, 2-20 be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-22 her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-23 _____________________________________ 2-24 President of the Senate 2-25 I hereby certify that the 3-1 above Resolution was adopted by 3-2 the Senate on May 25, 1993. 3-3 _____________________________________ 3-4 Secretary of the Senate 3-5 _____________________________________ 3-6 Member, Texas Senate
