No. 1058 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in 1-3 recognizing Yen-Lin Chen who recently was selected as one of 10 1-4 finalists in the 36th annual San Antonio Express-News 1-5 Outstanding Teen Contest; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The San Antonio Express-News designed the 1-7 Outstanding Teen Contest in 1957 and has continued the tradition 1-8 of honoring 10 high school seniors who represent the highest 1-9 standards of citizenship; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Candidates are selected for demonstrating 1-11 excellence in a variety of fields and for demonstrating character 1-12 and versatility; included in the criteria are consistency in 1-13 academic achievement, leadership ability, participation in 1-14 extracurricular school activities, community service, and other 1-15 exceptional qualities; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Yen-Lin Chen is an 18-year-old senior at Holmes 1-17 High School in San Antonio where she excels in science, mathematics, 1-18 and English; her impressive academic achievements include winning 1-19 national first place awards for the past two years at the National 1-20 Science Olympiad and the American Science Challenge in chemistry; 1-21 she is considered one of the top students in the nation in the 1-22 Academic Decathlon competition in chemistry; and 1-23 WHEREAS, A 1993 National Merit Scholar, Yen-Lin is a 2-1 member of the Math Honor Society, English Honor Society, Latin Club, 2-2 and Science Honor Society; she is ranked sixth in the nation in the 2-3 National Mathematics League Calculus division; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Known among her teachers and students for her 2-5 caring and concern for others, Yen-Lin shares her knowledge freely 2-6 and exhibits a vibrant love for life; she has conducted and 2-7 presented scientific research papers at the district, regional, and 2-8 state levels and is completing a scientific investigation which will 2-9 be entered in the 52nd Westinghouse Science Talent Search; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Among the many honors Yen-Lin has received are 2-11 being chosen as the Bausch and Lomb science medalist, the 2-12 San Antonio Optimist Youth in Science and Youth in Mathematics 2-13 honoree, and Westinghouse Science Talent Search National 2-14 Semifinalist; now, therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-16 73rd Legislature, hereby commend Yen-Lin Chen for her exceptional 2-17 accomplishments and extend congratulations to her for earning the 2-18 position of finalist in this year's Outstanding Teen Contest; and, 2-19 be it further 2-20 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-21 Miss Chen as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-22 _____________________________________ 2-23 President of the Senate 2-24 I hereby certify that the 2-25 above Resolution was adopted by 3-1 the Senate on May 25, 1993. 3-2 _____________________________________ 3-3 Secretary of the Senate 3-4 _____________________________________ 3-5 Member, Texas Senate
