    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure
    1-3  in recognizing Marlen Whitley who recently was selected as one
    1-4  of 10 finalists in the 36th annual San Antonio Express-News
    1-5  Outstanding Teen Contest; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, The San Antonio Express-News designed the
    1-7  Outstanding Teen Contest in 1957 and has continued the tradition
    1-8  of honoring 10 high school seniors who represent the highest
    1-9  standards of citizenship; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Candidates are selected for demonstrating
   1-11  excellence in a variety of fields and for demonstrating character
   1-12  and versatility; included in the criteria are consistency in
   1-13  academic achievement, leadership ability, participation in
   1-14  extracurricular school activities, community service, and other
   1-15  exceptional qualities; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Marlen Whitley is an outstanding student at
   1-17  Churchill High School who has excelled at meeting challenges in
   1-18  school and in life with enthusiasm, creativity, and maturity; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, A superior scholar and a leader in his school and
   1-20  community, Marlen maintains a 95 grade-point average and is an
   1-21  active member of the National Honor Society; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, He served as class vice-president for three years
   1-23  and was responsible for initiating and organizing many fundraisers
    2-1  and activities for his class; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, A dedicated volunteer, Marlen has spent many hours
    2-3  at the Castle Hills Nursing Home and the Battered Women's Shelter;
    2-4  he was a representative for the March of Dimes and the American
    2-5  Cancer Society, and he has helped to feed and clothe the needy at
    2-6  the Nolan Street Homeless Shelter; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, An exceptionally talented athlete, Marlen is captain
    2-8  of the varsity basketball team and was recognized as a member of the
    2-9  All District Athletic Team by the National Merit Achievement Program
   2-10  for Outstanding Negroes; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, Marlen is a young man of integrity, sensitivity,
   2-12  and generosity who has consistently manifested concern for others
   2-13  and an avid interest in the betterment of his community; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, Marlen plans to attend The University of Texas at
   2-15  Austin and major in international business; now, therefore, be it
   2-16        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-17  73rd Legislature, hereby commend Marlen Whitley for his exceptional
   2-18  accomplishments and extend congratulations to him for earning the
   2-19  position of finalist in this year's Outstanding Teen Contest; and,
   2-20  be it further
   2-21        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-22  him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
