No. 1067 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride 1-3 in recognizing the City of Laredo on the grand occasion of its 1-4 being named one of 10 recipients of the National Civic League's 1-5 All-America City award; and 1-6 WHEREAS, One of three Texas cities named as a finalist, 1-7 Laredo joins Fort Worth and Plano in being selected from 13 Texas 1-8 cities that submitted applications; and 1-9 WHEREAS, A city that is making great strides in almost every 1-10 sector of the community, Laredo has experienced unprecedented growth 1-11 in the last few years; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The city has handled its expansion admirably, with 1-13 a commitment to harmony and clear-sighted goals; and 1-14 WHEREAS, In earning the distinction of being selected 1-15 as a finalist for the All-America City award, the City of Laredo 1-16 had three projects that showcased its exemplary civic leadership; 1-17 and 1-18 WHEREAS, The Poncho de la Garza Affordable Housing 1-19 Development is a project that was made possible by the help 1-20 of the Laredo Affordable Housing Corporation, the City of Laredo 1-21 Department of Community Development, local financial institutions, 1-22 and generous contributions from the private sector; as a result, 1-23 28 families moved into their first homes at a cost of between 2-1 $23,000 and $26,000 apiece; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The Buena Vida Minority Health Coalition Program 2-3 was created by numerous civic and social agencies; it is a 2-4 community-based network of agencies helping to improve lifestyles 2-5 and construct environments conducive to healthier lives; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Through private donations and a state grant, the 2-7 Santo Nino Branch Library began operations in 1992 in one of the 2-8 city's most disadvantaged neighborhoods; the library promotes 2-9 literacy through general equivalency diploma classes and English as 2-10 a Second Language classes; and 2-11 WHEREAS, The City of Laredo has taken a leadership role in 2-12 solving problems that have for years affected people from 2-13 disadvantaged backgrounds and neighborhoods, and Laredoans deserve 2-14 to be proud of the city's worthy endeavors; now, therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-16 73rd Legislature, hereby commend the City of Laredo on its 2-17 innovative programs and extend congratulations on becoming a winner 2-18 of this prestigious award; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-20 the City of Laredo as a token of regard from the Texas Senate. 2-21 _____________________________________ 2-22 President of the Senate 2-23 I hereby certify that the 2-24 above Resolution was adopted by 2-25 the Senate on May 25, 1993. 3-1 _____________________________________ 3-2 Secretary of the Senate 3-3 _____________________________________ 3-4 Member, Texas Senate
