    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The National Science Foundation has
    1-3  established as its highest honor the Vannevar Bush Award to
    1-4  recognize an outstanding scientist whose work has had a positive
    1-5  effect on public policy; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, The National Science Foundation named
    1-7  Dr. Norman Hackerman as the 1993 recipient of this award on
    1-8  May 12, 1993; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Dr. Hackerman is a distinguished Texan who served
   1-10  The University of Texas at Austin for 25 years in a variety of
   1-11  positions including the presidency and who continues to serve
   1-12  as emeritus professor of chemistry; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Dr. Hackerman had a distinguished career as
   1-14  president of Rice University from 1970 to 1985 and continues to
   1-15  serve that institution as president emeritus; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The nation has benefitted from his public service
   1-17  as chairman of the National Science Board for 12 years and service
   1-18  on numerous other boards and commissions including the National
   1-19  Academy of Sciences; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Dr. Hackerman has a distinguished record of
   1-21  public service to the State of Texas, having testified before the
   1-22  Texas Legislature on numerous occasions and having served on select
   1-23  committees that have had far-reaching effects on Texas higher
    2-1  education; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Dr. Hackerman is a distinguished scientist whose
    2-3  work has been recognized by the Edward Goodrich Acheson Award of
    2-4  the Electrochemical Society, the Charles Lathrop Persons Award of
    2-5  the American Chemical Society, and the Phillip Hauge Abelson Prize
    2-6  of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, The State of Texas is a better place because of his
    2-8  steadfast commitment to the education of its young people; now,
    2-9  therefore, be it
   2-10        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-11  73rd Legislature, hereby congratulate Dr. Norman Hackerman for
   2-12  the outstanding recognition he has brought to the state by being
   2-13  selected as the recipient of the Vannevar Bush Award; and, be
   2-14  it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-16  Dr. Hackerman as an expression of sincere admiration from the
   2-17  Texas Senate for his continuing service to science and the people
   2-18  of this state and of the nation.
