    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Stockton Family Cemetery located in
    1-3  Bell County northwest of the City of Bartlett will receive an
    1-4  Official Texas Historical Marker at a special dedication ceremony
    1-5  on June 5, 1993; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Located on land originally granted to Moses Allen,
    1-7  a veteran of the Siege of Bexar, the cemetery has been in the
    1-8  Stockton family since 1870, when Douglas Hayden Stockton and his
    1-9  wife, Mary Elizabeth White, purchased over 1,200 acres of the land
   1-10  grant with their partner, J. O. Darby; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Stockton built their home
   1-12  near the present cemetery site, and they established the cemetery
   1-13  in 1890 when their 15-year-old son died; on December 15, 1908,
   1-14  Mary Elizabeth and Douglas Stockton legally designated the property
   1-15  as a family cemetery; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The cemetery contains over 80 graves and is still
   1-17  used by the Stockton descendents; Douglas and Mary Stockton are
   1-18  interred there as well as 12 of their 14 children; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Numerous graves of children and infants bear the
   1-20  dates of family tragedies; three family members who drowned in a
   1-21  hurricane in Corpus Christi in 1919 were brought for burial with
   1-22  other family members; and Ead White, a former slave who remained
   1-23  with the family after the Civil War, was laid to rest; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Cemeteries are important links to our past
    2-2  and their maintenance and preservation are a source of pride for
    2-3  families whose loved ones are buried there as well as citizens who
    2-4  appreciate their historical significance; now, therefore, be it
    2-5        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-6  73rd Legislature, hereby commend the Stockton family for their
    2-7  generosity and loving concern in preserving and protecting the
    2-8  Stockton Family Cemetery; and, be it further
    2-9        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-10  Stockton family as a memento of this historic occasion.
