    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                     Dr. LaRied Stephen Oates, Sr.
    1-5        WHEREAS, Shelby County lost one of its most distinguished
    1-6  citizens with the death of Dr. LaRied Stephen Oates, Sr.; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, A native of Shelby County, the esteemed physician
    1-8  was born on March 20, 1902, the son of John Charles and
    1-9  Elizabeth Taylor Oates; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, After graduating from The University of Texas and
   1-11  Baylor College of Medicine, he began practicing medicine in 1928;
   1-12  and
   1-13        WHEREAS, During his 60 years of medical practice, Dr. Oates
   1-14  earned the gratitude and respect of his patients, whom he treated
   1-15  with the utmost concern and compassion; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, A member of the Shelby County Medical Society and a
   1-17  lifetime member of the Texas Medical Association, Dr. Oates was
   1-18  committed to upholding the highest standards of his profession; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Active in numerous community affairs, he served with
   1-20  great distinction as a school trustee and as county health officer;
   1-21  and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Honored for his meritorious service on the Board of
   1-23  Regents of The University of Texas, Dr. Oates was also recognized
    2-1  by the American Cancer Society for his superlative efforts in the
    2-2  fight to control cancer and by the American Academy of General
    2-3  Practice for his contributions to the advancement of medicine; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, A gentleman in the truest sense of the word,
    2-5  Dr. Oates was noted for his courtliness and generous nature; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, His unassailable honesty and integrity were legendary
    2-7  and will be remembered by all who knew him; now, therefore, be it
    2-8        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-9  73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
   2-10  members of his family:  his son and daughter-in-law,
   2-11  Dr. Steve and Frances Shepherd Oates; his grandson
   2-12  LaRied Stephen Oates III; his grandson and granddaughter-in-law,
   2-13  Shepherd Weaver and Denise Dellinger Oates; and his great-grandson,
   2-14  Stephen Daniel Oates; and, be it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-16  members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
   2-17  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
   2-18  in memory of Dr. LaRied Stephen Oates, Sr.
