1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that the Texas Senate
1-3 joins the citizens of Deep East Texas in recognizing C. L. Simon
1-4 of Nacogdoches, Texas, for his lifetime of devoted service to the
1-5 people of the region; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Mr. Simon was chosen to receive the 1992-1993
1-7 Dr. Ralph W. Steen "East Texan of the Year" Memorial Award by
1-8 The Deep East Texas Council of Governments in grateful
1-9 acknowledgement of his leadership and significant contributions
1-10 over the past 50 years; and
1-11 WHEREAS, His steadfast interest in the growth and prosperity
1-12 of his community and the entire area has contributed substantially
1-13 to its development; and
1-14 WHEREAS, The distinguished educator spent his professional
1-15 career in Deep East Texas educational systems as a teacher in a
1-16 rural school in Cushing, principal of E. J. Campbell High School
1-17 in Nacogdoches, and assistant principal at Nacogdoches High School;
1-18 and
1-19 WHEREAS, Before his retirement in 1990, Mr. Simon served
1-20 with distinction as assistant superintendent in schools, earning
1-21 the admiration and respect of students, teachers, and parents; and
1-22 WHEREAS, The son of a farmer and schoolteacher, Mr. Simon
1-23 attended Mount Grove rural school and, later, a Jacksonville school
2-1 where he starred in the first football game he had ever seen; he
2-2 also starred in basketball and made the honor roll; and
2-3 WHEREAS, After graduating from high school, he continued
2-4 his studies at Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins on a football
2-5 scholarship; and
2-6 WHEREAS, He accepted a teaching position at a rural school
2-7 in Cushing where he taught four years while completing a bachelor
2-8 of arts degree at Texas College during the summers; and
2-9 WHEREAS, C. L. Simon married the former Ila M. Hancock,
2-10 who was also a teacher in Cushing, and they spent their summers
2-11 in Boulder where they earned their master of arts degrees from
2-12 the University of Colorado; and
2-13 WHEREAS, The World War II veteran served his country
2-14 admirably as a medical technician and was stationed for 14 months
2-15 in the European Theater; after the war he returned to his home to
2-16 resume teaching; and
2-17 WHEREAS, Strongly committed to education and Christian
2-18 principles, Mr. and Mrs. Simon helped many of their relatives and
2-19 students obtain a college education; and
2-20 WHEREAS, For half a century, Mr. Simon has played a major
2-21 role in various civic organizations that advanced the progress of
2-22 Nacogdoches; he is a member of the Retired Teachers Association,
2-23 Kiwanis Club, American Legion, and Phi Delta Kappa Educational
2-24 Fraternity; he also sponsors Future Farmers of America and
2-25 Boy Scouts of America and serves as chairman of the Board of
3-1 Trustees of Saint Paul Christian Methodist Episcopal Church; and
3-2 WHEREAS, Throughout his public life he has served on the
3-3 board of directors of the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce,
3-4 Nacogdoches City Commission, the National Association of Regional
3-5 Councils, the President's Advisory Committee, and the Human Resource
3-6 Policy Committee; and
3-7 WHEREAS, He has worked tirelessly for others with a quiet
3-8 dignity and grace that have endeared him to people all across
3-9 Deep East Texas; now, therefore, be it
3-10 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
3-11 73rd Legislature, hereby extend heartfelt congratulations to
3-12 C. L. Simon for his well-deserved honor and express appreciation
3-13 to him for his remarkable accomplishments; and, be it further
3-14 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3-15 Mr. Simon as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
