    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                        Martin L. "Red" Gibson
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the family
    1-6  and many friends of Martin L. "Red" Gibson in mourning the death
    1-7  of this respected professor of journalism on May 22, 1993; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Dr. Gibson joined The University of Texas at Austin
    1-9  in 1969 as an assistant professor and earned a doctorate at the
   1-10  university in 1973, when he was promoted to associate professor;
   1-11  and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Red Gibson was promoted to professor in 1981; at
   1-13  the time of his death, he held the Philip G. Warner Regents
   1-14  Professorship in Communication; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Dr. Gibson was educated at North Texas State
   1-16  University after he had attended the United States Naval Academy
   1-17  and The University of Texas at El Paso; he received his master's
   1-18  degree in journalism from Northwestern University; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Dr. Gibson served in the United States Army where
   1-20  he was the editor of the 10th Division newspaper; he had been a
   1-21  journalist for other newspapers, including the Galveston Daily News,
   1-22  Galveston Tribune, Chicago Tribune, New York Daily News,
   1-23  and the Austin American-Statesman; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, An inspired teacher, Dr. Gibson emphasized the
    2-2  necessity for learning the essential skills; he was a consultant
    2-3  for the Freedom Newspapers chain and wrote a monthly column for
    2-4  the Texas Press Association; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Dr. Gibson was the author of two books,
    2-6  Editing in the Electronic Era, and The Writer's Friend; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, Active in the Society of Professional Journalists,
    2-8  he had been recently named to head a national task force to examine
    2-9  the role of the media during the Branch Davidian standoff in Waco;
   2-10  and
   2-11        WHEREAS, A man of insight and strong ethics, Professor Gibson
   2-12  left a lasting standard for others to follow; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, The varied and notable achievements of this
   2-14  renowned journalist contributed greatly to the development of
   2-15  quality journalism in this country; and
   2-16        WHEREAS, A man of high principles and moral integrity,
   2-17  Red Gibson's presence will be greatly missed; now, therefore,
   2-18  be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-20  73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the members
   2-21  of his family:  his wife, Nancy Louise Westmoreland; his son,
   2-22  Martin L. Gibson III; and his daughter, Elizabeth Anne Gibson; and,
   2-23  be it further
   2-24        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-25  the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
    3-1  the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
    3-2  it do so in memory of Martin L. "Red" Gibson.
