    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                           Chester L. Koock
    1-5        WHEREAS, The City of Austin lost one of its most outstanding
    1-6  and well-loved citizens with the death of Chester L. Koock who died
    1-7  May 20, 1993, at the age of 88; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Born in Austin in 1905, Chester L. Koock was the son
    1-9  of Otto L. Koock and Dona Barksdale Koock; his great-grandparents,
   1-10  Wilhelm and Caroline Koock, were among the first settlers in
   1-11  Fredericksburg in 1846; his grandfather, William Koock, established
   1-12  the community of Koocksville, and his maternal great-grandparents,
   1-13  Lewis Barksdale and Mary Louise Gilliland, were pioneer settlers of
   1-14  Lockhart; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Chester Koock attended Pease School, Saint Edward's
   1-16  High School, and Saint Edward's University; he joined his father in
   1-17  the Voss and Koock Wholesale Hardware Company and later managed
   1-18  Koock's Jewelry Store; he married Mary Faulk on June 6, 1934; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, In 1946, Chester Koock and his wife established
   1-20  what has become a landmark in Austin, the famous Green Pastures
   1-21  Restaurant in the historic 1894 Faulk home; the restaurant continues
   1-22  in operation today, managed by his eldest son and his partner; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, An outstanding community leader, he was a member of
    2-1  the Kiwanis Club and the Knights of Columbus and a volunteer for
    2-2  Meals on Wheels and Brackenridge and Seton hospitals; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, A man of many talents, he was noted for his tenor
    2-4  voice; he sang for several years with barbershop groups and was a
    2-5  member of the Society for the Preservation of Barbershop Quartet
    2-6  Singing in America; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, A devout Catholic, he had served as choir director
    2-8  at Saint Mary's Cathedral and at Saint Ignatius Church; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
   2-10  Mr. Koock gave unselfishly of his time to others; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he will
   2-12  long be remembered as a man of high spirits who lived his life to
   2-13  the fullest; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, He was a distinguished and charming individual
   2-15  whose superior understanding, courage, and sense of humor will be
   2-16  treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore,
   2-17  be it
   2-18        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-19  73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
   2-20  bereaved family of Chester L. Koock:  his wife, Mary Faulk Koock;
   2-21  his children, Ken Koock, Karen Kuykendall, Martha Koock Ward,
   2-22  William "Guich" Koock, Tim Koock, Gretchen O'Boyle, and
   2-23  Judy Strassman; and his 14 grandchildren; and, be it further
   2-24        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-25  members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
    3-1  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
    3-2  in memory of Chester L. Koock.
