    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-3  recognize Ruth Robertson who received the Society of Woman
    1-4  Geographers' Outstanding Achievement Award in California
    1-5  May 15, 1993; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, A woman who has led a fascinating and rewarding
    1-7  life, Ruth Robertson was honored for her outstanding contributions
    1-8  to science, the arts, and humanity; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, A dedicated, resourceful, and trail-blazing woman,
   1-10  Ruth Robertson was one of the first woman photojournalists; she
   1-11  was the "first girl photographer" at the Peoria Evening-Star
   1-12  in 1939; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, A woman who set many records, she was the first
   1-14  woman to photograph baseball games from the infield at Wrigley
   1-15  Field, the only woman photographer in the press pool at the 1944
   1-16  Republican and Democratic National Conventions, the only woman war
   1-17  correspondent in Alaska in World War II, and the first person to
   1-18  lead a successful expedition into the interior of Venezuela to
   1-19  chart Angel Falls; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, One of the world's highest waterfalls, Angel Falls
   1-21  was hidden from the outside world prior to 1935 and had never been
   1-22  photographed; after several expeditions led by others had failed,
   1-23  with accompanying loss of lives, Ruth Robertson's mission succeeded;
    2-1  in 1949, the National Geographic Magazine featured her
    2-2  photographs and the story of the expedition in its November, 1949
    2-3  issue; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, The list of firsts that Ruth Robertson
    2-5  accomplished is long and her inspiring feats make her worthy
    2-6  indeed of legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
    2-7        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-8  73rd Legislature, hereby commend the work of Ruth Robertson and
    2-9  congratulate her for receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award;
   2-10  and, be it further
   2-11        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
   2-12  for her as an expression of esteem and admiration from the
   2-13  Texas Senate.
