No. 1179 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, Champion International Corporation was awarded 1-3 the Conservation Achievement Award by the Sportsmen Conservationists 1-4 of Texas on April 14, 1993, for its remarkable contributions to the 1-5 conservation of our state's wildlife and environment; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Located in Huntsville, Texas, Champion 1-7 International Corporation was recognized as Forest Conservationist 1-8 of the Year for its "Special Places in the Forest" program which 1-9 sets aside areas chosen for their uniqueness, beauty, and history; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, The company owns one million acres in 32 1-12 East Texas counties and operates two newsprint mills and two 1-13 plywood plants; under its unique program 12 sites have been chosen 1-14 for protection in eight counties; and 1-15 WHEREAS, These magnificent areas include Beech-Magnolia 1-16 Canyons, Blue Heron Rookery, The Oyster Reefs, and a series of 1-17 maintained woodland trails for recreation; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Managing its land for timber, recreation, 1-19 watershed, and wildlife, Champion International Corporation 1-20 initiated a program whereby companies owning rights-of-way across 1-21 company land provide seed, lime, and fertilizer; hunting clubs 1-22 leasing from the company provide annual mowing and year-round 1-23 maintenance; and 2-1 WHEREAS, The company has identified and prioritized 2-2 sites on its timberlands suitable for waterfowl habitat enhancement 2-3 and has worked with federal agencies and the statewide WHAT Ducks! 2-4 organization to complete work on six sites; each year additional 2-5 sites will be added; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Affiliated with the National Wildlife Federation 2-7 and the Texas Wildlife Foundation, the Sportsmen Conservationists 2-8 of Texas recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations for 2-9 their work to help secure our natural treasures for generations to 2-10 come; and 2-11 WHEREAS, The awards program is intended to encourage 2-12 increased interest and activities in the wise management of natural 2-13 resources and the control of environmental degradation; now, 2-14 therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-16 73rd Legislature, hereby express its profound gratitude to the 2-17 Champion International Corporation for its magnificent efforts to 2-18 preserve and protect some of the most beautiful areas of our state 2-19 for the enjoyment of all our citizens now and in the future; and, 2-20 be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-22 the distinguished group as an expression of the admiration and 2-23 appreciation of the Texas Senate. 2-24 _____________________________________ 2-25 President of the Senate 3-1 I hereby certify that the 3-2 above Resolution was adopted by 3-3 the Senate on May 30, 1993. 3-4 _____________________________________ 3-5 Secretary of the Senate 3-6 _____________________________________ 3-7 Member, Texas Senate
