    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-3  recognize John R. Lightfoot who will be honored on June 3, 1993,
    1-4  when the new John R. Lightfoot Law Enforcement Center is dedicated
    1-5  in Nacogdoches County; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Born in Bearden, Arkansas, in 1906, Mr. Lightfoot
    1-7  married Opel Williams in 1928; he and his wife arrived in Texas on
    1-8  September 13, 1936, and he went to work for Caro Lumber Company as
    1-9  manager of the company store until the mill closed in the late 1940s;
   1-10  and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Following his employment with the lumber company,
   1-12  Mr. Lightfoot managed a lumberyard for two years and then went to
   1-13  work for Lone Star Feed; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, John Lightfoot began his noteworthy law enforcement
   1-15  career when he was elected sheriff of Nacogdoches County in 1960; he
   1-16  took the oath of office January 1, 1961; he served the citizens of
   1-17  Nacogdoches County with courage and integrity for 24 years, retiring
   1-18  on December 31, 1984; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, A concerned and active member of his profession,
   1-20  John Lightfoot was president of the Sheriffs' Association in 1976
   1-21  and 1977; in 1983 and 1984, he was president of the East Texas Peace
   1-22  Officers' Association; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, During the course of his illustrious career,
    2-1  Sheriff Lightfoot served under six different governors:
    2-2  Price Daniel, John Connally, Preston Smith, Dolph Briscoe,
    2-3  William P. Clements, Jr., and Mark White; his performance of his
    2-4  duties was exemplary; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, In 1982, Sheriff Lightfoot was awarded the
    2-6  Tom Tellepsen Award, the highest possible honor in law enforcement;
    2-7  and
    2-8        WHEREAS, John Lightfoot is one of those courageous men who
    2-9  risk their lives every day to protect the homes, neighborhoods,
   2-10  and communities of our citizens; he is truly worthy of legislative
   2-11  recognition; now, therefore, be it
   2-12        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-13  73rd Legislature, hereby express sincere appreciation to
   2-14  John R. Lightfoot for his meritorious service to the citizens of
   2-15  Nacogdoches County; and, be it further
   2-16        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for this
   2-17  distinguished gentleman as an expression of high regard from the
   2-18  Texas Senate.
