S.R. No. 1193 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Frank L. Wright 1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins with 1-6 the citizens of Austin and the family and many friends of 1-7 Frank L. Wright in mourning the loss of this distinguished 1-8 gentleman who died May 7, 1993; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Frank Wright was born October 5, 1916, in 1-10 Greeley, Colorado; he was educated in the Webster Groves, Missouri, 1-11 school system; and 1-12 WHEREAS, A man of deep intellectual curiosity, Mr. Wright 1-13 graduated from Washington University in Saint Louis and earned a 1-14 master's degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1940; he 1-15 continued taking college courses all his life; and 1-16 WHEREAS, For much of his career, Frank Wright was a 1-17 director for the Young Men's Christian Association in Baltimore, 1-18 Cincinnati, Seattle, and Austin; and 1-19 WHEREAS, In 1974, he went to work for the Texas Association 1-20 of College Teachers as Executive Director and remained in that post 1-21 until his retirement in 1984; he continued to counsel faculty 1-22 members after his official retirement; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Indefatigable in his lobbying activities to 2-1 promote higher education, he put together a retirement package 2-2 for the members of the Texas Association of College Teachers that 2-3 most of the college teachers in Texas preferred to the state-run 2-4 Employees Retirement System; and 2-5 WHEREAS, A dedicated community activist, Frank was a 2-6 precinct chair in the Democratic Party for 28 years and a longtime 2-7 advocate of grass roots organizations formed by citizens groups; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Mr. Wright was a prime mover for the City Bond Issue 2-9 for Affordable Housing for the homeless; he was also a Commissioner 2-10 for the Travis County Housing Authority and a member of the Social 2-11 Policy Advisory Committee on Housing; and 2-12 WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Mr. Wright was extremely 2-13 active at University United Methodist Church, serving as a leader 2-14 in many church activities; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Recipient of numerous honors and awards, he was 2-16 selected as a Good Neighbor by the Austin American-Statesman 2-17 in June, 1989, Public Citizen of the Year for 1989 by the local 2-18 chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, Community 2-19 Volunteer of the Year by the University United Methodist Church 2-20 for 1989 and 1991, and Outstanding Long-term Election Judge in 2-21 Austin by the Austin American-Statesman in 1988; and 2-22 WHEREAS, Noted for his compassion and integrity, he will be 2-23 forever cherished in the hearts and minds of all who knew him; now, 2-24 therefore, be it 2-25 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-1 73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to his wife, 3-2 Marjorie, and his two daughters; and, be it further 3-3 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 3-4 members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from 3-5 the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it 3-6 do so in memory of Frank L.
