BACKGROUND

About 5,000 children are born with Down syndrome each year, and the
number is expected to double within the next decade. In recent
years, the U.S. Congress has designated October as "National Down
Syndrome Month" in an effort to promote education, awareness, and
understanding of this genetic disorder.

PURPOSE

To declare October 1995 and October 1996 as Down Syndrome Month in
Texas.

SUMMARY OF COMMITTEE ACTION

The resolution was considered by the Public Health Committee in a
public hearing on May 2, 1995. The resolution was reported
favorably without amendment, with the recommendation that it do
pass and be printed and sent to the Committee on Local and Consent
Calendars, by a record vote of 6 ayes, 0 nays, 0 PNV, and 3 absent.
