BILL ANALYSIS S.C.R. 136 By: Sibley (Stiles) 05-02-95 Committee Report (Unamended) BACKGROUND Awareness of prostate cancer can result in the early detection and cure of the disease. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American men, and is the second leading cause of male cancer deaths in the United States. It is estimated that in 1995, there will be 244,000 new cases diagnosed and 40,400 deaths in the State of Texas, and nearly one million American men have prostate cancer and are unaware of it. PURPOSE S.C.R. 136 would designate the week of each year beginning with Father's Day as Texas Prostate Cancer Awareness Week. SUMMARY OF COMMITTEE ACTION S.C.R. 136 was considered by the Public Health Committee in a public hearing on May 2, 1995. The resolution was reported favorably without amendment, with the recommendation that it do pass and be printed and be sent to the Committee on Local and Consent Calendars, by a record vote of 6 AYES, 0 NAYS, 0 PNV, and 3 ABSENT.
