                                 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
    1-1                                AN ACT
    1-2  relating to the amount a hotel or motel may charge for a telephone
    1-3  call.
    1-4        BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
    1-5        SECTION 1.  Section 93B, Public Utility Regulatory Act
    1-6  (Article 1446c, Vernon's Texas Civil Statutes), is amended to read
    1-7  as follows:
    1-8        Sec. 93B.  The amount a hotel or motel charges for a local
    1-9  telephone call, a credit card telephone call, a collect telephone
   1-10  call, or any other local telephone call for which assistance from
   1-11  the hotel or motel operator is not required may not exceed $1 <50
   1-12  cents>.
   1-13        SECTION 2.  The importance of this legislation and the
   1-14  crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
   1-15  emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
   1-16  constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
   1-17  days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,
   1-18  and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its
   1-19  passage, and it is so enacted.
   1-20                       COMMITTEE AMENDMENT NO. 1
   1-21        Amend House Bill No. 823 as follows:
   1-22        (1)  On page 1, line 11, strike "may not exceed $1 <50
   1-23  cents>" and substitute "must be disclosed to each occupant of a
   1-24  hotel or motel, by printed notification provided to the occupant
    2-1  upon check-in, and by prominently displaying the amount to be
    2-2  charged on or near each telephone available for use by the occupant
    2-3  in the hotel or motel <may not exceed 50 cents>".
