                                 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
    1-1                                AN ACT
    1-2  relating to the designation of doctor of osteopathic medicine as an
    1-3  appropriate legally required identification.
    1-4        BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
    1-5        SECTION 1.  Section 3, Healing Art Identification Act
    1-6  (Article 4590e, Vernon's Texas Civil Statutes), is amended to read
    1-7  as follows:
    1-8        Sec. 3.  Healing Art Identifications.  Every person licensed
    1-9  to practice the healing art heretofore or hereafter by either the
   1-10  Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, the State Board of Dental
   1-11  Examiners, the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners, the Texas
   1-12  State Board of Examiners in Optometry, the State Board of Chiropody
   1-13  Examiners and the State Board of Naturopathic Examiners shall in
   1-14  the professional use of his name on any sign, pamphlet, stationery,
   1-15  letterhead, signature, or on any other such means of professional
   1-16  identification, written or printed, designate in the manner set
   1-17  forth in this Act the system of the healing art which he is by his
   1-18  license permitted to practice.  The following are the legally
   1-19  required identifications, one of which must be used by
   1-20  practitioners of the healing art: (1)  If licensed by the Texas
   1-21  State Board of Medical Examiners on the basis of the degree Doctor
   1-22  of Medicine:  physician and/or surgeon, M.D.; doctor, M.D.; doctor
   1-23  of medicine, M.D.
   1-24              (2)  If licensed by the Texas State Board of Medical
    2-1  Examiners on the basis of the degree Doctor of Osteopathy:
    2-2  physician and/or surgeon, D.O.; Osteopathic physician and/or
    2-3  surgeon; doctor, D.O.; doctor of osteopathy; doctor of osteopathic
    2-4  medicine; osteopath; D.O.
    2-5              (3)  If licensed by the State Board of Dental
    2-6  Examiners:  dentist; doctor, D.D.S.; doctor of dental surgery;
    2-7  D.D.S.; doctor of dental medicine, D.M.D.
    2-8              (4)  If licensed by the Texas Board of Chiropractic
    2-9  Examiners:  chiropractor; doctor, D.C.; doctor of Chiropractic;
   2-10  D.C.
   2-11              (5)  If licensed by the Texas State Board of Examiners
   2-12  in Optometry:  optometrist; doctor, optometrist; doctor of
   2-13  optometry; O.D.
   2-14              (6)  If a practitioner of the healing art is licensed
   2-15  by the State Board of Podiatry Examiners, he shall use one of the
   2-16  following identifications:  chiropodist; doctor, D.S.C.; Doctor of
   2-17  Surgical Chiropody; D.S.C.; podiatrist; doctor, D.P.M.; Doctor of
   2-18  Podiatric Medicine; D.P.M.
   2-19              (7)  If licensed by the State Board of Naturopathic
   2-20  Examiners:  naturopathic physician; physician, N.D.; doctor of
   2-21  naturopathy; N.D.; doctor, N.D.
   2-22        SECTION 2.  The importance of this legislation and the
   2-23  crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
   2-24  emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
   2-25  constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
   2-26  days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,
   2-27  and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its
    3-1  passage, and it is so enacted.
