No. 2438 74R6688 CAG-D A BILL TO BE ENTITLED 1-1 AN ACT 1-2 relating to the preservation of the history of the music of the 1-3 Spanish-speaking communities of Texas. 1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: 1-5 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 75, Education Code, is 1-6 amended by adding Section 75.004 to read as follows: 1-7 Sec. 75.004. ARCHIVE OF TEJANO MUSIC. (a) The institute 1-8 shall establish an archive to collect, maintain, organize, and 1-9 interpret documents, recordings, and other records relating to the 1-10 history and development of the music of the Spanish-speaking 1-11 communities of Texas, including the history of Tejano, mariachi, 1-12 conjunto, Tex-Mex, and Spanish polka music. 1-13 (b) In addition to its duties under Subsection (a), the 1-14 institute may produce films, tapes, publications, and exhibits on 1-15 subjects relating to that music for statewide use on television, in 1-16 classrooms, in museums, and at public gatherings for the benefit of 1-17 the people of Texas. 1-18 (c) The institute may accept gifts, endowments, and grants 1-19 from any source in aid of the conduct and operation of the archive. 1-20 SECTION 2. The importance of this legislation and the 1-21 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an 1-22 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the 1-23 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several 1-24 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended, 2-1 and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its 2-2 passage, and it is so enacted.
