                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The residents of Mount Pleasant are justifiably
    1-2  proud of their city's reputation as a vibrant, progressive
    1-3  community, and the members of the Texas Legislature are pleased to
    1-4  join them in a well-deserved salute to their fair city; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Located amid beautifully wooded hills that gave the
    1-6  city its aptly descriptive name, this Northeast Texas community had
    1-7  the distinct honor in 1993 of being the only Texas city to receive
    1-8  recognition as "One of the Best 100 Small Towns in America" and as
    1-9  a "Texas Main Street City" in the same year, adding to the city's
   1-10  growing renown; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, In addition to earning these prestigious laurels,
   1-12  which recognize the city's charm as a congenial place in which to
   1-13  live and work, Mount Pleasant also can lay claim to fame as "The
   1-14  Bass Capital of Texas" with four magnificent lakes only 20 minutes
   1-15  away providing outstanding fishing as well as swimming, boating,
   1-16  and other water sports for area residents and visitors alike; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, In recent years state records for largemouth bass
   1-18  have been set at these area lakes, and the fishing attracts anglers
   1-19  from across the country who travel to Mount Pleasant for national
   1-20  bass fishing tourneys; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Blessed with abundant natural beauty, Mount Pleasant
   1-22  affords ample recreation opportunities of many types at eight
   1-23  nearby parks, including the 640-acre Lake Bob Sandlin State Park,
   1-24  as well as at Lakes Monticello, Welsh, and Cypress Springs, and,
    2-1  thanks to the moderate climate, outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy
    2-2  picnicking, hiking, and camping activities in every season of the
    2-3  year; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, While these natural attributes attract visitors from
    2-5  near and far, making tourism a vital component of the city's
    2-6  economic growth, the city's dynamic business climate and
    2-7  industrious citizenry have been drawing a variety of new
    2-8  businesses, and the city, which also serves as the seat of
    2-9  government for Titus County, has benefited greatly from the
   2-10  constant activity that characterizes the increasingly diversified
   2-11  local economy; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, Also contributing to Mount Pleasant's economic
   2-13  growth have been the city's educational and cultural facilities;
   2-14  the city is home to several museums, a thriving art center, a
   2-15  medical center, and a fine academic institution in Northeast Texas
   2-16  Community College; and
   2-17        WHEREAS, Endowed with enviable natural resources and an
   2-18  energetic, forward-looking populace, and enjoying robust economic
   2-19  growth, Mount Pleasant is representative of the small-town
   2-20  communities that embody the spirit of Texas and make it a special
   2-21  place in which to be, and it is indeed deserving of special praise
   2-22  and recognition; now, therefore, be it
   2-23        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-24  hereby designate January 25, 1995, as Mount Pleasant Day and
   2-25  commend all of its many citizens for their contributions to the
   2-26  betterment of this state; and, be it further
   2-27        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-1  prepared for the city of Mount Pleasant as an expression of high
    3-2  esteem by the Texas Legislature.
