                                 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The State of Texas traditionally has recognized a
    1-2  variety of official state symbols as tangible representations of
    1-3  the proud spirit and heritage of our state; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, The bluebonnet, the pecan tree, the lightning whelk,
    1-5  and the mockingbird are examples of some natural specimens that
    1-6  serve to symbolize the great diversity of the Texas landscape,
    1-7  while the state dish, chili, fittingly represents another aspect of
    1-8  our shared culture as Texans; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, In keeping with this custom, the designation of the
   1-10  harvester ant as the official State Insect of Texas will provide
   1-11  suitable recognition for this notable inhabitant of the Lone Star
   1-12  State; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, One of the most industrious denizens of our state,
   1-14  the harvester ant subsists primarily on seeds collected near its
   1-15  nest and is a common sight to all Texans; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The harvester ant is among the most accomplished of
   1-17  architects in the insect kingdom; these marvelous creatures
   1-18  construct an intricate labyrinth of tunnels and specialized
   1-19  chambers designed to create maximum efficiency for all members of
   1-20  the ant colony; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, The harvester ant is as determined and adaptable as
   1-22  the pioneers who tamed the frontier of our great state and would
   1-23  indeed serve as a fitting symbol of Texas' indomitable spirit; now,
   1-24  therefore, be it
    2-1        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
    2-2  hereby designate the harvester ant as the official State Insect of
    2-3  Texas.
