                                 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The State of Texas has lost a distinguished citizen
    1-2  with the passing of the Honorable Malouf Abraham, Sr., on May 30,
    1-3  1994; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, The son of Lebanese immigrants, Mr. Abraham was a
    1-5  lifelong resident of Canadian who became a self-made millionaire in
    1-6  the oil and gas industry and by leasing mineral rights throughout
    1-7  the eastern Texas Panhandle; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, He pursued a variety of successful ventures
    1-9  throughout his career, having owned and operated a restaurant in
   1-10  his hometown, sold insurance with his brother, Naceeb, and even run
   1-11  a coat check service at the State Fair of Texas while in Dallas;
   1-12  and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Mr. Abraham was held in such high esteem by the
   1-14  citizens of Canadian that he was elected to serve as the
   1-15  community's mayor in 1953 and again in 1955; continuing his
   1-16  interest in public service, this fine gentleman also represented
   1-17  the best interests of area citizens when he was elected to serve
   1-18  the first of two terms as a member of the Texas House of
   1-19  Representatives in 1965; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Dynamic and committed, Mr. Abraham was a noted
   1-21  philanthropist who touched the lives of many people through his
   1-22  uncommon benevolence; he established endowment funds at West Texas
   1-23  A&M University and Texas Tech University and a scholarship fund
   1-24  through the Amarillo Area Foundation that has since benefitted
    2-1  numerous agricultural students from the Panhandle region; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Abraham gave generously of himself
    2-3  to benefit many other worthy organizations throughout the area,
    2-4  including the YMCA, the Edward Abraham Memorial Home, and the
    2-5  Little House Day Care Center in Canadian; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Malouf Abraham, Sr., was a man of extraordinary
    2-7  vision and energy who consistently used his unique talents and
    2-8  intelligence to better the world around him; his presence will be
    2-9  deeply missed by all who were privileged to know him, but his rare
   2-10  generosity of spirit will live on in the many good works he leaves
   2-11  behind; now, therefore, be it
   2-12        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-13  hereby pay tribute to the life of Malouf Abraham, Sr., and extend
   2-14  deepest sympathy to the members of his family:  to his wife, Iris;
   2-15  to his sons, Dr. Malouf Abraham, Jr. of Canadian and Bill Ed
   2-16  Abraham of Dallas; to his daughter, Betty Abraham Cooper of
   2-17  Canadian; to his brothers, Tom Abraham of Canadian and Naceeb
   2-18  Abraham of Amarillo; and to his eight grandchildren and four
   2-19  great-grandchildren; and, be it further
   2-20        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-21  prepared for the members of his family, and that when the Texas
   2-22  House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in
   2-23  memory of Malouf Abraham, Sr.
