                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The State of Texas has lost a distinguished Texan
    1-2  with the passing of the Honorable Guy Hazlett on June 1, 1994, at
    1-3  the age of 70; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Born in 1923 in Glazier, Texas, this outstanding
    1-5  individual was graduated from Canadian High School in 1940; he
    1-6  attended West Texas State University, where he earned a bachelor of
    1-7  science degree, and continued his higher education at Baylor
    1-8  University School of Law, where he obtained  his law degree; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Judge Hazlett demonstrated exemplary patriotism
   1-10  during World War II, serving his country with distinction as a B-17
   1-11  pilot in the United States Air Corps; when his aircraft was downed
   1-12  by enemy fire and he became a prisoner of war, this inspirational
   1-13  leader continued to display unflinching bravery in the face of
   1-14  extreme hardship; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, After military service, he returned to Texas and
   1-16  married the former Margie Kelln on September 8, 1945, in Canadian;
   1-17  and
   1-18        WHEREAS, He established a thriving law practice in Borger in
   1-19  1950 and three years later was elected as the member of the Texas
   1-20  House of Representatives  from the 86th District, in which capacity
   1-21  he labored tirelessly to ensure a brighter future for all Texans;
   1-22  and
   1-23        WHEREAS, A staunch believer in the legal system, he became
   1-24  judge of the Court of Domestic Relations in 1963, serving in that
    2-1  capacity until 1977; from 1977 until his retirement in 1990, he
    2-2  was judge of the 316th Judicial District Court; during his notable
    2-3  tenure on the bench, Judge Hazlett demonstrated both the
    2-4  exceptional understanding of the law and the consistent
    2-5  impartiality required by that demanding position; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, In addition to pursuing his career in public
    2-7  service, Judge Hazlett also gave freely of his time and energies to
    2-8  a variety of worthy organizations, including the American Legion,
    2-9  the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the District 11 Order of DeMolay, the
   2-10  Order of the Eastern Star, the Borger Bar Association, the Kiwanis
   2-11  Club, the Gateway PTA, and the Hutchinson County Juvenile Board,
   2-12  which he served as chairman; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, Judge Hazlett was a man of rare integrity and
   2-14  compassion whose devotion to the betterment of his community and
   2-15  state  served as a constant source of inspiration to those about
   2-16  him; although his wisdom and warmth will be missed by all who knew
   2-17  him, his remarkable spirit will live on in the hearts of the many
   2-18  people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-20  hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Guy Hazlett and
   2-21  extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
   2-22  Margie Hazlett; to his children, Guy Hazlett II, Dr.  Michael
   2-23  Hazlett, and Kandice Ballman; to his brother, Elmer Hazlett; to his
   2-24  sister, Donna Hensley; to his grandchildren and
   2-25  great-grandchildren; and to the many other friends and relatives of
   2-26  this fine gentleman; and, be it further
   2-27        RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
    3-1  for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of
    3-2  Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory
    3-3  of the Honorable Guy Hazlett.
