                                 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-2  join the citizens of Collin County in a joyous celebration of
    1-3  Collin County Day on February 22, 1995; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Named for pioneer settler Collin McKinney, who built
    1-5  a log cabin near present-day Anna in 1842, Collin County was
    1-6  created from Fannin County and organized in 1846; originally Caddo
    1-7  Indian country, the area lay north of the early routes used by
    1-8  Spanish explorers; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, On the Blackland Prairie of Northeast Texas, Collin
   1-10  County has a rolling terrain that drains into the East and Elm
   1-11  Forks of the Trinity River; the heavy black clay soil produces a
   1-12  variety of native timber including oak, elm, bois d'arc, pecan, and
   1-13  ash; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Collin County is a major agricultural area that
   1-15  yields cotton, wheat, peanuts, alfalfa, and sorghum; beef cattle,
   1-16  horses, and the dairy industry are important income producers; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, The City of McKinney became the county seat in 1848
   1-18  when it was moved from Buckner to a more central location, and
   1-19  since then, the city has become a retail and wholesale center with
   1-20  varied manufacturing plants; visitors enjoy the Heard Natural
   1-21  Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary, the Bolin Wildlife Exhibit,
   1-22  and the Old Post Office Museum; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Plano, one of the state's fastest growing cities,
   1-24  has spilled over into neighboring Denton County, and with its
    2-1  population of 136,340, the city is fast becoming a commercial and
    2-2  financial center; known as the "Balloon Capital of Texas," Plano
    2-3  hosts popular hot-air balloon races in September; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Collin County is blessed with an excellent climate,
    2-5  an abundance of natural resources, beautiful scenery, and excellent
    2-6  recreational opportunities; its industrious, energetic, and
    2-7  friendly residents are its greatest assets; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, Collin County Day is an appropriate occasion for the
    2-9  Texas Legislature to recognize the important contributions that
   2-10  Collin County and its citizens have made and continue to make to
   2-11  the state's greatness as well as to the growth and progress of
   2-12  their magnificent county; now, therefore, be it
   2-13        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-14  hereby recognize February 22, 1995, as Collin County Day and extend
   2-15  best wishes to its residents for a most enjoyable and rewarding
   2-16  celebration; and, be it further
   2-17        RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to
   2-18  Collin County as a memento of this important day and as an
   2-19  expression of high regard by the Texas Legislature.
