                                 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, March 8 and 9, 1995, have been selected as Marshall
    1-2  Days at the State Capitol to honor the people of this lovely East
    1-3  Texas city and to recognize their outstanding contributions to the
    1-4  culture, history, and economy of the State of Texas; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The county seat of Harrison County since 1842, this
    1-6  charming city was named in honor of U.S. Supreme Court Chief
    1-7  Justice John Marshall, one of the most distinguished magistrates in
    1-8  the history of our nation and the creator of the principle of
    1-9  judicial review; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, In the 19th century, Marshall was known throughout
   1-11  the South as the "Athens of East Texas" in recognition of its
   1-12  remarkable cultural and educational resources; the site of three
   1-13  Protestant churches before 1850 and the host of many cultural
   1-14  events, this enchanting town was also home to the Texas Republican
   1-15  newspaper and to numerous institutions of higher learning,
   1-16  including Marshall University, Bishop College, St. Mary's Academy,
   1-17  Wiley College, and East Texas Baptist College; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, This rich heritage has been preserved for future
   1-19  generations of Texans by local residents who have devoted
   1-20  themselves to restoring and maintaining Marshall's impressive
   1-21  historic buildings; artifacts of this city's opulent past, the
   1-22  area's elegant plantation houses, the downtown Ginocchio National
   1-23  Historic District, and the Starr Family State Historic Site attract
   1-24  numerous tourists each year; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Both residents and visitors participate in
    2-2  Marshall's many exciting cultural events, which include the
    2-3  Stagecoach Days celebration each May and the FireAnt Festival,
    2-4  MarketFest, and Tennessee Walking Horse Show; during the winter
    2-5  months, thousands of tourists flock to the city to view the
    2-6  spectacular Wonderland of Lights, one of the largest and most
    2-7  impressive Christmas light displays in the nation; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, Situated in the heart of the Piney Woods, Marshall
    2-9  is an ideal vacation spot for nature lovers, many of whom combine a
   2-10  sightseeing vacation with fishing, waterskiing, camping, and
   2-11  hunting at nearby Caddo Lake State Park; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, In addition to its booming tourist industry, this
   2-13  exceptional city enjoys a diverse economy based on oil production,
   2-14  timber processing, and manufacturing; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, Blessed with a rich heritage, abundant natural
   2-16  resources, and a dynamic citizenry, Marshall is truly one of our
   2-17  state's most remarkable cities, and the efforts of its residents
   2-18  truly merit special legislative recognition and praise; now,
   2-19  therefore, be it
   2-20        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-21  hereby designate March 8 and 9, 1995, as Marshall Days at the State
   2-22  Capitol and join with the citizens of Marshall in paying tribute to
   2-23  one of the Lone Star State's most distinguished cities; and, be it
   2-24  further
   2-25        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-26  prepared for the city of Marshall as an expression of high regard
   2-27  by the Legislature of the State of Texas.
