H.C.R. No. 74 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is proud to honor ZaZa Marie 1-2 Bass, whose quick response in an emergency saved the life of Fallon 1-3 Hamrick; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Ms. Bass is an esteemed resident of Lovelady, where 1-5 she lives with her two sons, Courtney and Daon, and is employed as 1-6 a cafeteria worker and substitute bus driver by the Lovelady 1-7 Independent School District; and 1-8 WHEREAS, On the afternoon of November 16, 1993, Ms. Bass was 1-9 driving a busload of children home from school when she noticed a 1-10 child in distress coming toward her as she glanced in her rearview 1-11 mirror; the child, Fallon Hamrick, was gasping for air and making 1-12 motions indicating she was choking; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Ms. Bass immediately stopped the bus, turned Fallon 1-14 around, and began to administer the Heimlich maneuver, a technique 1-15 she had only read about and seen on television; refusing to give up 1-16 after her first attempts failed, Ms. Bass administered the 1-17 technique to Fallon again and was able to successfully dislodge the 1-18 jawbreaker that had been blocking Fallon's windpipe; and 1-19 WHEREAS, After the ordeal was over, this compassionate woman 1-20 remained at Fallon's side, offering much needed comfort and 1-21 reassurance to the shaken child, who made a full recovery from the 1-22 incident; and 1-23 WHEREAS, This prompt and expert intervention under enormous 1-24 pressure averted what could have been a terrible tragedy; Fallon's 2-1 mother, Lee Hamrick, her younger brother, and the entire Lovelady 2-2 community are indeed fortunate to be able to entrust their loved 2-3 ones to the care of this dedicated woman, and her heroic actions 2-4 truly merit our highest praise and recognition; now, therefore, be 2-5 it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-7 hereby commend ZaZa Marie Bass for her exceptional display of 2-8 composure and skill that resulted in saving the life of a child; 2-9 and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-11 prepared for Ms. Bass as an expression of highest regard by the 2-12 Legislature of the State of Texas.
