No. 87 74R5711 SMC-D CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, State law specifies in Section 4.10, Article 601b, 1-2 Vernon's Texas Civil Statutes, those persons eligible for burial in 1-3 the State Cemetery and authorizes the legislature to grant 1-4 eligibility to other persons through the adoption of a concurrent 1-5 resolution; and 1-6 WHEREAS, J. Neal Miller, Jr., a member of the Interstate Oil 1-7 and Gas Compact Commission, has expressed a desire to be buried in 1-8 the State Cemetery; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Mr. Miller's long and illustrious record of public 1-10 service began in 1964 when he was elected mayor of the city of 1-11 Orange, and during his accomplished tenure in office, he helped to 1-12 initiate Orange County Day at the State Capitol; and 1-13 WHEREAS, This patriotic gentleman served in the United States 1-14 Army during World War II and the Korean conflict, receiving nine 1-15 decorations for his valor and courage; and 1-16 WHEREAS, In the ensuing years, Mr. Miller has dedicated 1-17 himself to preserving the historic State Capitol, contributing his 1-18 time and resources to the furnishing of the Lieutenant Governor's 1-19 Reception Room; he helped to save the "Capitol Oaks" during the 1-20 Capitol's restoration by having them transplanted to the grounds of 1-21 the John H. Reagan Building in the Capitol Complex; and 1-22 WHEREAS, This hardworking Texan also was instrumental in the 1-23 effort to restore the original goddess of liberty that graced the 1-24 dome of the Capitol for 97 years and to have her placed in the 2-1 Texas Memorial Museum on The University of Texas campus; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Mr. Miller has a keen personal interest in Texas and 2-3 its historic Capitol; he can date his Texas ancestors back to 1822, 2-4 one of whom worked on the construction of the original State 2-5 Capitol; and 2-6 WHEREAS, J. Neal Miller, Jr., continues to assist the State 2-7 Preservation Board with various projects and to render long hours 2-8 of dedicated service to the protection of this state's historic 2-9 legacy; in light of his outstanding contributions, it is fitting 2-10 that he be allowed to designate the State Cemetery as his final 2-11 resting place; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-13 hereby authorize the burial of J. Neal Miller, Jr., in the State 2-14 Cemetery, provided proper application for assignment of burial 2-15 space is made to the General Services Commission as required by 2-16 law.
