                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The studies of the arts, sciences, and humanities
    1-2  are woven into the fabric of our cultural identity, and advancement
    1-3  in these areas opens up new horizons in learning and allows us to
    1-4  celebrate the diversity and unique cultural heritage of Texas; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Recognizing outstanding individuals in these fields
    1-6  and bestowing on them titles of honor is a long-standing practice
    1-7  in many states and serves as an encouragement to other talented
    1-8  researchers and practitioners of these studies; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, By implementing a cultural awareness program that
   1-10  includes a system of awards for those who have made significant
   1-11  contributions in the fields of science, art, and the humanities,
   1-12  the Texas Legislature will foster the expression and exchange of
   1-13  ideas, which should be the highest priority of a democratic
   1-14  society; now, therefore, be it
   1-15        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   1-16  hereby establish the Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts,
   1-17  Humanities, and Sciences, to be given annually to Texans who
   1-18  demonstrate outstanding creative and intellectual achievement in
   1-19  these fields of study; and, be it further,
   1-20        RESOLVED, That the nominations committee for these awards be
   1-21  composed of 13 members:  two house members appointed by the speaker
   1-22  of the house of representatives; two senators appointed by the
   1-23  lieutenant governor; two members from the Texas Commission on the
    2-1  Arts; two members from the Texas Committee for the Humanities; two
    2-2  members from the Texas National Research Laboratory Commission and
    2-3  three appointees named by the governor; and, be it further
    2-4        RESOLVED, That this committee compile a list of nominees in
    2-5  the areas of the arts, the sciences, and the humanities and submit
    2-6  the names of these nominees to the governor; and, be it further
    2-7        RESOLVED, That the Governor of the State of Texas these
    2-8  select one person from each field to receive the Governor's Awards
    2-9  for Excellence in the Arts, Humanities, and Sciences.
