No. 107 1-2 (In the Senate - Received from the House May 10, 1995; 1-3 May 11, 1995, read first time and referred to Committee on Natural 1-4 Resources; May 25, 1995, reported favorably by the following vote: 1-5 Yeas 8, Nays 0; May 25, 1995, sent to printer.) 1-6 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-7 WHEREAS, Nestled in the gently rolling hills of northwest 1-8 Milam County, Sugarloaf Mountain is a well-known natural and 1-9 historical landmark; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The adjacent Little River is a significant natural 1-11 and recreational resource, enjoyed by many citizens in the 1-12 surrounding area for its swimming, fishing, and other water 1-13 activities; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Recognized as a venerated and sacred site to the 1-15 Tonkawa Indians, Sugarloaf Mountain is an important link to the 1-16 history and heritage of Texas; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Offering miles of scenic vistas and acres of 1-18 tranquil settings, Sugarloaf Mountain has for generations been a 1-19 unique recreational attraction for area residents; now, therefore, 1-20 be it 1-21 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 1-22 hereby direct that the Parks and Wildlife Department may undertake 1-23 a study of the alternatives for preserving Sugarloaf Mountain, 1-24 including but not limited to establishing a state park at the site, 1-25 and to report its finding to the Texas Legislature not later than 1-26 August 31, 1996; and, be it further 1-27 RESOLVED, That the department consult with county and local 1-28 officials, other state agencies, and private conservation groups to 1-29 explore all alternatives for protection of the significant features 1-30 associated with Sugarloaf Mountain; and, be it further 1-31 RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward official copies 1-32 of this resolution to the members of the Parks and Wildlife 1-33 Commission and to the executive director of the Parks and Wildlife 1-34 Department. 1-35 * * * * *
