                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The observance of National Science and Technology
    1-2  Week was initiated by the National Science Foundation in 1985 to
    1-3  foster public understanding of science and technology and to
    1-4  promote appreciation for the important role that scientific
    1-5  education, scientific research, and technological advancement play
    1-6  in the life of every American citizen; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, In partnership with universities, science museums,
    1-8  and corporate sponsors, the National Science Foundation has
    1-9  developed this truly remarkable program to develop scientific
   1-10  literacy among Americans of all ages, to promote innovation and
   1-11  excellence in science education, and to inspire more young people,
   1-12  particularly females and minorities, to pursue careers in the
   1-13  fields of science and technology; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, National Science and Technology Week also promotes
   1-15  recognition of the importance of scientific research and
   1-16  technological development in ensuring our nation's economic
   1-17  prosperity; this event is commemorated with a wide spectrum of
   1-18  hands-on activities and educational programs designed to give
   1-19  children a chance to explore possible careers as teachers,
   1-20  scientists, and engineers; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Lasting from April 21 to 29, 1995, this year's
   1-22  National Science and Technology Week will coincide with the 25th
   1-23  anniversary of Earth Day and will highlight environmental issues;
   1-24  and
    2-1        WHEREAS, For the first time in this event's 10-year history,
    2-2  the National Science Foundation has selected 46 national network
    2-3  partners to serve as information and education centers, including
    2-4  the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, and Texas joins the
    2-5  rest of the nation in participating in this event; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, During National Science and Technology Week, Texans
    2-7  will be able to experience firsthand the excitement of scientific
    2-8  exploration and discovery at special celebrations and events to be
    2-9  held at this exceptional institution, as well as at other museums,
   2-10  zoos, gardens, aquariums, and planetariums around the Lone Star
   2-11  State; now, therefore, be it
   2-12        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-13  hereby designate April 21-29, 1995, and April 21-29, 1996, as
   2-14  National Science and Technology Weeks in Texas and encourage
   2-15  schools, universities, and other public institutions and
   2-16  communities throughout the state to celebrate this important
   2-17  occasion in an appropriate manner.
