HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The state's leading nonprofit voluntary diabetes
1-2 organization, the American Diabetes Association, Texas Affiliate,
1-3 the state's primary public agency devoted to diabetes programs, the
1-4 Texas Diabetes Council, and other organizations such as the Nueces
1-5 County Medical Center and the Coastal Bend Area Chapter have formed
1-6 a strategic partnership for the implementation of Operation: Defeat
1-7 Diabetes in Corpus Christi; and
1-8 WHEREAS, Operation: Defeat Diabetes in Corpus Christi, which
1-9 began in January 1994, is the first program of its kind in the
1-10 nation to be implemented and was formed in Nueces County to reduce
1-11 diabetes complications and the long-term effects of the disease;
1-12 and
1-13 WHEREAS, Operation: Defeat Diabetes in Corpus Christi has
1-14 provided regular diabetes education seminars for physicians,
1-15 nurses, dieticians, other health care professionals, and patients;
1-16 and
1-17 WHEREAS, Operation: Defeat Diabetes in Corpus Christi has
1-18 promoted early diagnosis of diabetes through aggressive public
1-19 awareness with public forums, newspaper articles, public service
1-20 announcements on television and radio, and a 30-minute television
1-21 special; and
1-22 WHEREAS, Financial support for the program and diabetes
1-23 medication and supplies are provided by six pharmaceutical
1-24 companies: Becton Dickinson, Boehringer Mannheim, Bristol-Myers
2-1 Squibb, Eli Lilly and Company, Sandoz Pharmaceuticals, and the
2-2 Upjohn Company; and
2-3 WHEREAS, Additional supporters are National Health
2-4 Laboratories, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, HEB
2-5 grocery chain, area hospitals, media outlets, and other health care
2-6 providers giving unselfishly of their time and efforts; now,
2-7 therefore, be it
2-8 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-9 hereby express its highest appreciation to the partners and
2-10 supporters of Operation: Defeat Diabetes in Corpus Christi and
2-11 extend its concern for those with diabetes.
