    1-6                      HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-7        WHEREAS, The Houston International Sports Committee has been
    1-8  formed as a nonprofit organization for the purpose of attracting
    1-9  future Olympic and Pan-American Games to the city of Houston; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, The committee intends to prepare a bid for such
   1-11  games that will include the construction of new facilities and the
   1-12  refurbishment of old facilities without the use of taxpayer money,
   1-13  as was accomplished by the city of Los Angeles with the Summer
   1-14  Olympics in 1984; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Houston's hosting of future Olympic and Pan-American
   1-16  Games will provide enormous benefit to the entire State of Texas as
   1-17  well as the city of Houston and Harris County, specifically
   1-18  including economic benefits, and will be a monumental step in
   1-19  revitalizing the State of Texas as well as the city of Houston; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Hosting such games in the state will bring tourism
   1-21  and publicity to the state; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Houston's hosting of future Olympic and Pan-American
   1-23  Games will enhance the state's stature as an international
   1-24  participant and Houston's stature as an international city, thereby
   1-25  encouraging and promoting international trade within the state and
   1-26  promoting and fostering international relationships for the state;
   1-27  and
   1-28        WHEREAS, Hosting such games in the state will promote and
   1-29  foster a statewide community spirit; and
   1-30        WHEREAS, Bob Lanier, mayor of the city of Houston, and Robert
   1-31  Eckels, Harris County judge, as well as other community leaders
   1-32  have given their full support and cooperation to the Houston
   1-33  International Sports Committee and its efforts; now, therefore, be
   1-34  it
   1-35        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   1-36  hereby recognize the Houston International Sports Committee and
   1-37  endorse its efforts to attract future Olympic and Pan-American
   1-38  Games to the city of Houston; and, be it further
   1-39        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   1-40  call on the private and public sectors within the state to promote
   1-41  the efforts of the committee to bring the Olympic and Pan-American
   1-42  Games to the city of Houston.
