                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, February 1, 1995, marked the occasion of the 150th
    1-2  anniversary of the chartering of Baylor University, one of the
    1-3  state's premier institutions of higher learning; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Named for the esteemed Judge R. E. B. Baylor, one of
    1-5  the school's original trustees, the university was established at
    1-6  Independence in Washington County by the Texas Baptist Education
    1-7  Society and opened its doors to its first class of students on May
    1-8  18, 1846; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, During the Civil War and the subsequent
   1-10  Reconstruction period, Baylor's leaders struggled to maintain the
   1-11  university's development, and in 1886 Baylor merged with Waco
   1-12  University, also a Baptist institution, and relocated to its
   1-13  current site; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, The succeeding decades have seen Baylor University
   1-15  grow to become one of the most highly regarded institutions of
   1-16  higher learning in the nation, and its justly deserved reputation
   1-17  for academic excellence has attracted students from all 50 states
   1-18  and 70 other nations; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Baylor University now boasts an enrollment of more
   1-20  than 12,000 students and has a superb faculty of 650 dedicated men
   1-21  and women; the university system also includes the Baylor
   1-22  University Medical Center in Dallas, which also serves as
   1-23  headquarters for the Baylor Health Care System and its network of
   1-24  satellite hospitals across Texas; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, For a century and a half, Baylor University has
    2-2  provided its students with both the necessary knowledge to
    2-3  successfully face life's challenges and the wisdom to wield that
    2-4  knowledge appropriately, and the 150th anniversary of its
    2-5  chartering is indeed an occasion worthy of special legislative
    2-6  recognition; now, therefore, be it
    2-7        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
    2-8  hereby congratulate Baylor University on the 150th anniversary of
    2-9  the chartering of that fine institution and extend best wishes for
   2-10  continued success in the future; and, be it further
   2-11        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-12  prepared for prominent display at Baylor University as an
   2-13  expression of high regard by the Legislature of the State of Texas.
