                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, Dorothy and Clarence Scharbauer, Jr., are esteemed
    1-2  residents of Midland who have contributed greatly to higher
    1-3  education in West Texas through their philanthropic efforts in
    1-4  behalf of Midland College; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, These outstanding Texans recently gave one million
    1-6  dollars to the Chaparral Circle Endowment Fund and, through this
    1-7  extraordinary altruism, the Scharbauers have helped to ensure that
    1-8  Midland College will remain one of the finest community colleges in
    1-9  the nation; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Scharbauer are both lifetime residents
   1-11  of the community they are proud to call home; Mr. Scharbauer's
   1-12  distinguished lineage in West Texas dates back to the 1880s and he
   1-13  has added to his family's respected name through his extensive
   1-14  achievements in the ranching industry and his notable contributions
   1-15  in the realm of civic affairs; a 1942 graduate of Midland High
   1-16  School, he was inducted into his alma mater's Hall of Honor in
   1-17  1993; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, Mrs. Scharbauer, a member of a Midland oil family
   1-19  and a 1948 graduate of Midland High School, is an accomplished
   1-20  businesswoman and community leader; she works closely with her
   1-21  husband in managing the family's vast oil, gas, and ranching
   1-22  interests and is widely recognized as a champion American quarter
   1-23  horse breeder and as the owner of award-winning Thoroughbred
   1-24  racehorses; and
    2-1        WHEREAS,  To honor the Scharbauers for their remarkable
    2-2  support, Midland College recently named a pivotal facility on
    2-3  campus the Dorothy and Clarence Scharbauer, Jr., Student Center;
    2-4  and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Originally completed in 1975, the student center
    2-6  received an extensive addition in 1991 and currently houses such
    2-7  essential campus services as the registrar's office, the financial
    2-8  aid office, the testing center, the vocational career center and
    2-9  job placement office, the campus bookstore, and the college snack
   2-10  bar; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Scharbauer are indeed deserving of this
   2-12  recognition and more for a gift that surely will be of value to the
   2-13  students of Midland College for generations to come; now,
   2-14  therefore, be it
   2-15        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-16  hereby commend Dorothy and Clarence Scharbauer, Jr., for their
   2-17  exceptional generosity and for their unwavering commitment to
   2-18  maintaining the quality of higher education in the State of Texas;
   2-19  and, be it further
   2-20        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-21  prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Scharbauer as an expression of highest
   2-22  regard by the Legislature of the State of Texas.
