    1-6                      HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-7        WHEREAS, It is the custom of the Legislature of the State of
    1-8  Texas to pay tribute to important Lone Star citizens by naming
    1-9  public institutions and public facilities in their honor; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Martha Allen, an outstanding Texan who passed away
   1-11  on September 26, 1994, is one such individual worthy of this
   1-12  distinction; in 1952 she was one of the first people to volunteer
   1-13  at the Terrell State Hospital and continued to make many invaluable
   1-14  contributions to this institution over the course of her life; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, This fine woman, who devoted more than 12,000 hours
   1-16  of service to the Terrell State Hospital, was the first chairman of
   1-17  the hospital's Volunteer Services Council; she also was
   1-18  instrumental in the creation of volunteer programs at other state
   1-19  hospitals throughout Texas and served as the first chairman of the
   1-20  Volunteer Services State Council; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Mrs. Allen worked tirelessly to secure funding for
   1-22  the Terrell State Hospital Family Center and, in fact, was the
   1-23  first person to contribute funds toward this exemplary facility;
   1-24  she dedicated her time and energy to raising funds for other worthy
   1-25  projects as well, including the All-Faiths Chapel and the Lake
   1-26  Tawakoni Lodge; and
   1-27        WHEREAS, A determined advocate for those receiving care at
   1-28  Texas state hospitals, Mrs. Allen was respected and admired by all
   1-29  those who had the pleasure of knowing her, and in light of her more
   1-30  than four decades of volunteer service, it is indeed fitting that
   1-31  her legacy of commitment and compassion be officially memorialized
   1-32  for future generations; now, therefore, be it
   1-33        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   1-34  hereby direct that the present Terrell State Hospital Family Center
   1-35  be named the Martha Allen Family Center; and, be it further
   1-36        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   1-37  prepared for her daughter, Patricia McMillan, and that the
   1-38  secretary of state forward an official copy of this resolution to
   1-39  the executive director of the General Services Commission.
