                              HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The passing of Gus Mutscher, Sr., on April 8, 1995,
    1-2  at the age of 91, has brought a great loss to the many friends and
    1-3  relatives of this esteemed Texan; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Born November 3, 1903, to Reinhard and Emma
    1-5  Mutscher, he was reared in the William Penn community where, in
    1-6  1928, he took as his bride the former Gertie Goeke at Bethlehem
    1-7  Lutheran Church of William Penn; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, The couple enjoyed an exceptionally happy and
    1-9  rewarding marriage that spanned more than six decades and was
   1-10  blessed by the birth of four children, Goeke, Betty, Margie, and
   1-11  Mr. Mutscher's namesake, Gus F. Mutscher, who served this state as
   1-12  the 66th Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Mr. Mutscher was an admired resident of Brenham who
   1-14  distinguished himself throughout a multifaceted career that
   1-15  encompassed farming and ranching, motel management, and employment
   1-16  in the auto parts industry; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Despite his busy schedule, this fine gentleman
   1-18  always found time to devote to his church, which he served as an
   1-19  officer for more than 30 years through his membership in Bethlehem
   1-20  Lutheran Church of William Penn and Grace Lutheran Church of
   1-21  Brenham; Mr. Mutscher also gave freely of his time and energies to
   1-22  benefit the Lutheran Laymen's League for over 45 years; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Mr. Mutscher was a loyal supporter of Blinn College
   1-24  and The University of Texas at Austin, which is home to one of the
    2-1  premier baseball teams in the country; he enjoyed a lifelong love
    2-2  of the game, having played ball himself as a young man, and he was
    2-3  inducted into the South Central Texas Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of
    2-4  Fame for his achievements on March 16, 1980; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Gus Mutscher, Sr., was a valued member of his
    2-6  community whose presence and accomplishments greatly enriched the
    2-7  lives of all who knew him; though he will be deeply missed, he will
    2-8  long be remembered by the many people whose lives he touched during
    2-9  his years on this earth; now, therefore, be it
   2-10        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-11  hereby pay tribute to the life of Gus Mutscher, Sr., and extend
   2-12  heartfelt sympathy to the members of his family:  to his wife,
   2-13  Gertie; to his children and their spouses, Goeke and JoAnn
   2-14  Mutscher, Gus F. Mutscher, Betty and Fred Boecker, and Margie and
   2-15  Herb Foelber; to his grandchildren, Laura and David Meade, Glen and
   2-16  Ellen Mutscher, Sara and Peter Melsness, Lisa and James Mikus, Gus
   2-17  Hurley Mutscher, Julie and Ed Hardin, Scott Boecker, and Rebecca
   2-18  and Steve Phillpott; to his great-grandchildren, Audra and Allison
   2-19  Meade, Jonathan Hardin, and Christopher and Eric Phillpott; to his
   2-20  brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Meta Mutscher; and to his
   2-21  sisters and brothers-in-law, Gertrude Klussmann, Lydia and Herman
   2-22  Mertins, Louise Klussmann, and Robert Lenz; and, be it further
   2-23        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-24  prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
   2-25  House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in
   2-26  memory of Gus Mutscher, Sr.
