No. 190 74R11900 PAN-D HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, A work of art can immortalize for all time the 1-2 spirit of the age and the cultural heritage by which it was 1-3 inspired; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Recognizing outstanding artists by bestowing on them 1-5 titles of honor is a longstanding practice and serves as an 1-6 encouragement to other talented artists; and 1-7 WHEREAS, In recent years, the State of Texas has chosen to 1-8 appropriately honor those Texans who have exhibited exceptional 1-9 ability in portraying the beauty of this state, some facet of its 1-10 history, or the proud spirit of its people by designating them 1-11 Texas State Artists; and 1-12 WHEREAS, For the period of November 1, 1993, through October 1-13 31, 1994, Roy Lee Ward has been selected Texas State Artist in the 1-14 category of two-dimensional media, and James Eddleman has been 1-15 named the recipient of this honor in the three-dimensional media 1-16 category; and 1-17 WHEREAS, A distinguished son of the Lone Star State, Mr. Ward 1-18 has brought the historical and contemporary West to life through 1-19 his outstanding studio paintings, murals, and bronzes, while 1-20 Mr. Eddleman is a source of great pride to the citizens of Lubbock 1-21 for his efforts to further the Texas mystique through his 1-22 extraordinary sculptures; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Chosen Texas State Artists for the period of 1-24 November 1, 1994, through October 31, 1995, are Frederick Carter in 2-1 the two-dimensional media artist category and Garland Weeks in the 2-2 three-dimensional media category; and 2-3 WHEREAS, A former resident of Galveston and longtime citizen 2-4 of El Paso, Frederick Carter is an accomplished painter who is 2-5 known for his unique style, use of color, and extensive subject 2-6 matter, which ranges from scenes depicting turn-of-the-century 2-7 facades along sun-drenched streets of Mexico to period 2-8 architecture, inspired by his boyhood days among the historic homes 2-9 of Galveston Island; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Award-winning sculptor Garland A. Weeks is a 2-11 sixth-generation Texan and a former professional rodeo champion 2-12 whose representational sculptures reflect a keen sense of history 2-13 and great admiration for the characters of the West, both 2-14 historical and contemporary, who struggled to find their niche in 2-15 the western lifestyle; and 2-16 WHEREAS, All of these individuals have been instrumental in 2-17 crafting some of the finest artwork produced in the Lone Star State 2-18 today, and it is appropriate that we honor them for their efforts 2-19 to immortalize the grand state we are all proud to call home; now, 2-20 therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-22 hereby congratulate Roy Lee Ward, James Eddleman, Frederick Carter, 2-23 and Garland Weeks on their selection as Texas State Artists and 2-24 commend them for their very significant artistic contributions to 2-25 the citizens of this state.
