H.C.R. No. 192 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Don and Nell Furgeson have given many years of 1-2 dedicated service to the students and faculty of the Midland 1-3 Independent School District, and they are indeed deserving of 1-4 special recognition on the occasion of their retirement; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A graduate of Texas Tech University, Mr. Furgeson 1-6 joined the business office of the Midland school district in 1958 1-7 and eventually earned promotion to the post of business manager; he 1-8 became well known to many of the eligible young ladies of the 1-9 community as a leading member of Midland's Bachelors Club, but 1-10 destiny had a different fate in store for this personable young 1-11 bachelor; and 1-12 WHEREAS, After repeatedly requesting one of Henderson 1-13 Elementary School's new teachers to turn in her forms to the 1-14 business office, Mr. Furgeson was driven by his sense of 1-15 professional obligation to go out to the school and pick up the 1-16 forms in person; much to his surprise, the delinquent teacher was 1-17 as beautiful and charming as she was prone to procrastination, and 1-18 after a romantic courtship, the school's second-grade class was 1-19 planning their teacher's wedding; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Nell Furgeson was an enthusiastic and highly 1-21 regarded educator at Henderson for several years, and she was 1-22 selected to represent the Midland area as a Community Ambassador 1-23 Teacher during a 1962 trip to Turkey; she retired from teaching to 1-24 raise her family, but she continued to volunteer her time and 2-1 energy to the school district over the years before resuming her 2-2 professional career with the Carver Cultural Center; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Mrs. Furgeson also is a life member of the 2-4 Parent-Teacher Association and one of the organizers of the 2-5 community's award-winning VIPS program, while Mr. Furgeson has 2-6 served the Midland School Board for many years; they are active in 2-7 political circles as longtime supporters of the Republican Party, 2-8 and their family has participated in the Daughters of the American 2-9 Revolution Fourth of July children's parade for more than 20 years; 2-10 and 2-11 WHEREAS, Mr. Furgeson's ardent and continued support for the 2-12 Texas Tech Red Raiders won his wife's support for the school as 2-13 well, and although she graduated from Texas Woman's University, 2-14 Mrs. Furgeson now attends Tech games with her husband and 2-15 enthusiastically joins in the tortilla-flinging festivities; and 2-16 WHEREAS, Both Mr. and Mrs. Furgeson are longtime members of 2-17 Midland's United Methodist Church, and since their wedding on June 2-18 6, 1964, the church has been the site of both of their daughters' 2-19 weddings, with Amy and Bobby marrying on June 19, 1993, and 2-20 Catherine and Jim marrying on July 30, 1994; and 2-21 WHEREAS, These remarkable individuals were honored for their 2-22 service at a retirement dinner held in their honor January 21, 2-23 1995, and their many friends and neighbors in the community were 2-24 delighted to have that opportunity to show the Furgesons their 2-25 thanks and appreciation; the couple's devotion to education has 2-26 obviously earned them the esteem and respect of the people of 2-27 Midland, and the members of the Texas House of Representatives and 3-1 Senate are proud to join in commending Don and Nell Furgeson for 3-2 their outstanding service to their community and state; now, 3-3 therefore, be it 3-4 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 3-5 hereby honor Don and Nell Furgeson for their many years of service 3-6 to the Midland Independent School District and extend to them 3-7 warmest best wishes for a happy and fulfilling retirement; and, be 3-8 it further 3-9 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-10 prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Furgeson as an expression of high regard 3-11 by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
