No. 208 74R11121 NBM-F HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The death of Elizabeth Hale Calderon at the age of 1-2 65 on November 8, 1993, was a great loss to her family, to her many 1-3 friends and professional colleagues, and to the numerous 1-4 organizations that benefited from the generosity, guidance, and 1-5 wisdom of this highly esteemed citizen of Houston; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Born in Waco on October 8, 1928, Mrs. Calderon 1-7 attended Baylor University and received her master's degree in 1-8 business administration from the University of Houston; and 1-9 WHEREAS, After attending Baylor University, Mrs. Calderon 1-10 began her journalism career with her late husband, Melvin Leon 1-11 Steakley, editing newspapers in Dumas, Seminole, Irving, and 1-12 Pasadena while rearing their five children; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Throughout her distinguished professional life she 1-14 was recognized for her numerous contributions to journalism and 1-15 corporate and organizational communications, culminating with her 1-16 being honored by the Houston chapter of the International 1-17 Association of Business Communicators with its first Lifetime 1-18 Achievement Award in 1991; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Mrs. Calderon served as executive assistant for 1-20 development for Joe L. Allbritton during his tenure as chairman of 1-21 the board of Baylor College of Medicine from 1965-1968 and began 1-22 her career in organizational communications in 1968 at Bank of the 1-23 Southwest as employee communications coordinator; and 1-24 WHEREAS, She began her long and loyal service to Hermann 2-1 Hospital in 1975, for 15 years directing its public affairs, 2-2 marketing, development, patient relations, physician relations, 2-3 volunteer, and chaplaincy programs with professionalism, 2-4 creativity, and integrity during some of the most pivotal junctures 2-5 in its history; and 2-6 WHEREAS, A highly valued contributor to the management teams 2-7 of the hospital, its teaching affiliate, The University of Texas 2-8 Medical School at Houston, and the Texas Medical Center, 2-9 Mrs. Calderon provided counsel and perspective that were sought and 2-10 revered by many leaders of Houston's health care and medical 2-11 education establishment; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Mrs. Calderon, a deeply spiritual person, was a 2-13 faithful member of The First United Methodist Church of Houston, 2-14 Texas, whose uncommon friendship was a comfort and an inspiration 2-15 to all who were privileged to have known her; and 2-16 WHEREAS, Mrs. Calderon dedicated herself tirelessly and 2-17 unselfishly to the success of her children and her proteges in the 2-18 field of communications; although her family and many friends 2-19 deeply miss her wise direction, integrity, insight, kindness, and 2-20 sense of humor, her memory will endure in the hearts and minds of 2-21 all those whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be it 2-22 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-23 hereby pay tribute to the extraordinary life of Elizabeth Hale 2-24 Calderon and extend sympathy to the members of her family: to her 2-25 mother, Ora Dawson Hale of Houston; to her children and their 2-26 families: Marvin L. and Becki Steakley, Stephanie, Jonathan, and 2-27 Andrew Steakley of Houston; Martha S. and Leslie V. Masters, 3-1 Laurel and David Masters of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Barbara 3-2 Elizabeth Steakley and Milan Yager, Austin and Reid Yager of 3-3 Alexandria, Virginia; David G. and Paula Steakley and David Joseph 3-4 Steakley of Charlotte, North Carolina; Suzanne S. and Mark Frazier, 3-5 Matthew and Sarah Frazier of Waco; to her brother and his wife, 3-6 Gilbert Giles and Barbara Hale; and to her nieces and nephews, Jim 3-7 Hale, Laura Hale, Jamie Vauricka, and Tom Hale; and, be it further 3-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-9 prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas 3-10 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in 3-11 memory of Elizabeth Hale Calderon.
