HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, Chelsi Smith of Deer Park was named Miss Universe
1-2 1995 at the annual Miss Universe Pageant held May 12, 1995, in
1-3 Windhoek, Namibia, the first pageant to be held in Africa; and
1-4 WHEREAS, A sophomore at San Jacinto Junior College, Ms. Smith
1-5 earned the Miss Texas USA title in June 1994 and went on to secure
1-6 the Miss USA title in February of this year; she is the sixth Miss
1-7 USA to win the coveted title of Miss Universe; and
1-8 WHEREAS, Ms. Smith began competing in beauty pageants three
1-9 years ago as a means of earning money for college, but she has
1-10 decided to postpone her schooling for the time being so that she
1-11 may fully devote herself to the duties of her title; as Miss
1-12 Universe, she intends to work for the benefit of children's and
1-13 women's issues, and she hopes to promote physical fitness and good
1-14 health among young people across the nation; and
1-15 WHEREAS, While preparing for the Miss Texas Pageant, she
1-16 consulted a nutritionist and worked out strenuously every day to
1-17 become physically prepared for the event, and she hopes to teach
1-18 other young people about the strong link between a positive body
1-19 image and self-esteem; and
1-20 WHEREAS, A humorous, loving, and strong-willed individual,
1-21 Ms. Smith won the hearts of her fellow contestants in the Miss
1-22 Texas USA Pageant, and she became the first woman to win both the
1-23 titles of Miss Congeniality and Miss Texas USA; and
1-24 WHEREAS, A tremendous source of pride and admiration to her
2-1 many friends and neighbors in Deer Park, Ms. Smith has reached the
2-2 pinnacle of success by attaining the title of Miss Universe, and
2-3 she is indeed deserving of special recognition as she prepares to
2-4 represent the Lone Star State and America to millions of people
2-5 around the world; now, therefore, be it
2-6 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-7 hereby congratulate Chelsi Smith on her recent selection as Miss
2-8 Universe 1995 and extend warmest best wishes to her for continued
2-9 success in her future endeavors; and, be it further
2-10 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-11 prepared for Ms. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2-12 House of Representatives and Senate.
