H.R. No. 20 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of W. F. Conway, the former 1-2 sheriff of Montague County, has brought a great loss to the friends 1-3 and relatives of this esteemed gentleman; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born on April 22, 1922, in Oakland, Texas, 1-5 Mr. Conway devoted much of his life to the protection and support 1-6 of his fellow Texans, building a distinguished career in law 1-7 enforcement that has won him the admiration and respect of his 1-8 colleagues throughout the state; and 1-9 WHEREAS, While a young man, he served as a night watchman in 1-10 Henrietta, a patrolman in Bridgeport, and a city patrolman in 1-11 Bowie; this outstanding officer earned a reputation for hard work 1-12 and honesty as a member of the Montague County Sheriff's 1-13 Department, where he served until 1974, and as a lawman with the 1-14 Wise County Sheriff's Department, where he served for three years; 1-15 and 1-16 WHEREAS, In recognition of his exceptional abilities in the 1-17 field of law enforcement, Mr. Conway was named sheriff of Montague 1-18 County in 1977 and served with honor until his retirement in 1984; 1-19 and 1-20 WHEREAS, Named "Lawman of the Year" by the Texas State 1-21 Sheriffs Association, this distinguished Texan was the arresting 1-22 officer of notorious criminal Henry Lee Lucas; one year later, 1-23 Mr. Conway retired, ending a remarkable career in law enforcement 1-24 that spanned 26 years; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Not only a dedicated public servant but a devoted 2-2 husband and father as well, Mr. Conway enjoyed a happy and 2-3 successful marriage to his wife of 25 years, Jennie Lee; he also 2-4 took great pride in the accomplishments of his six children, 16 2-5 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to know Mr. Conway will 2-7 not soon forget the courage and commitment he brought to each facet 2-8 of his life, both personal and professional; loved and respected by 2-9 countless friends, he was a man of tremendous integrity who will 2-10 long be remembered by the many people whose lives he touched during 2-11 his years on this earth; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-13 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of former Montague 2-14 County Sheriff W. F. Conway and extend deepest sympathy to the 2-15 members of his family: to his wife, Jennie Lee Conway; to his 2-16 children, Rachel Ingram, Frankie Castle, and Sharon James, all of 2-17 Nocona, Carolyn Fenoglio of Fort Worth, and Herman William Conway 2-18 of Forestburg; to his brother, Doyle Conway of Palestine; to his 2-19 beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and to his numerous 2-20 friends and colleagues; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared 2-22 for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of 2-23 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of W. F. 2-24 Conway.
