R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of Jack Crain on October 22,
1-2 1994, at the age of 74, has brought a great loss to the many
1-3 friends and relatives of this renowned athlete and public servant;
1-4 and
1-5 WHEREAS, Born January 7, 1920, in Nocona, Texas, he attended
1-6 Nocona High School and while there displayed remarkable athletic
1-7 ability as a member of the Indians football team; on graduating, he
1-8 chose to continue his pursuit of excellence on and off the field at
1-9 The University of Texas at Austin; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Mr. Crain's exceptional gridiron exploits assured
1-11 his legendary status as one of the finest players ever to don the
1-12 orange and white; he also received well-deserved national
1-13 recognition by being named to the All-America teams of 1940 and
1-14 1941, and his Longhorn season records for most interceptions in a
1-15 season and most yards on interception returns have never been
1-16 eclipsed; and
1-17 WHEREAS, Answering his country's call during its darkest
1-18 hour, this outstanding patriot demonstrated unflinching bravery as
1-19 a member of the U.S. Navy during the Second World War; and
1-20 WHEREAS, After completing his military service, he returned
1-21 to Nocona to farm; he married the former Jean Howard on April 29,
1-22 1951, and their mutual devotion remained steadfast until her death
1-23 in 1978; and
1-24 WHEREAS, He began his career as a public servant in 1960,
2-1 winning election to the Texas Legislature as the representative
2-2 from District 61, and he served with distinction for three terms
2-3 before retiring to devote more time to his family; and
2-4 WHEREAS, As generous as he was talented, this exceptional
2-5 Texan was an active fund-raiser for the North Texas Rehabilitation
2-6 Center and founded a men's bible class in honor of his wife at the
2-7 First Baptist Church; and
2-8 WHEREAS, Jack Crain was a man of rare talent and integrity
2-9 whose achievements served as a constant source of inspiration to
2-10 those about him; although his wisdom and compassion will be missed
2-11 by all who knew him, his remarkable spirit will live on in the
2-12 hearts of the many people whose lives he touched; now, therefore,
2-13 be it
2-14 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
2-15 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Jack Crain and extend
2-16 sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his daughter,
2-17 Jan Sansing of Wichita Falls; to his son, Joe Jack Crain of Nocona;
2-18 to his two grandchildren; and to the many other friends and
2-19 relatives of this beloved gentleman; and, be it further
2-20 RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
2-21 for members of the family and that when the Texas House of
2-22 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jack
2-23 Crain.
