                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Aida Laurel Garza retired June 28, 1993, from her
    1-2  position as director of elementary education with the Laredo
    1-3  Independent School District, drawing to a close a distinguished
    1-4  career in the field of education that has spanned 37 years; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Mrs. Garza was graduated from Texas Woman's
    1-6  University with a bachelor's degree in speech education, and she
    1-7  furthered her education there by earning a master's degree in
    1-8  speech and hearing therapy before undertaking postgraduate work at
    1-9  The University of Texas and Texas A&I  University at Kingsville;
   1-10  and
   1-11        WHEREAS, This outstanding educator began her career as a
   1-12  speech teacher in 1956 at M.B. Lamar Jr. High School, where she
   1-13  also became involved in the school's highly acclaimed Pre-School
   1-14  Summer and Adult Basic Education programs; an innovative leader in
   1-15  her chosen profession, she went on to initiate speech and hearing
   1-16  therapy in the district in 1963; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Mrs. Garza also excelled as an administrator and was
   1-18  promoted to instructional supervisor before she was named principal
   1-19  of D.D. Hachar Elementary School in 1974; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Highly regarded by her colleagues and supervisors
   1-21  for her expertise, hard work, and dedication, she became director
   1-22  of elementary education for the district in 1980 and ably served in
   1-23  that capacity until her retirement; and
   1-24        WHEREAS, Throughout her exceptional tenure with the Laredo
    2-1  Independent School District, Mrs. Garza has earned a special place
    2-2  in the hearts of many of her young students and has served as an
    2-3  inspiration to her colleagues in the teaching profession; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, She also has made many significant contributions to
    2-5  the field of education through her leadership of such prominent
    2-6  educational organizations as the Texas State Teachers Association,
    2-7  the Laredo Administrators and Supervisors Organization, and Delta
    2-8  Kappa Gamma; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, In recognition of the exemplary contributions
   2-10  Mrs. Garza has made for the betterment of her community, she was
   2-11  awarded the George Washington Honor Medal, and the City of Laredo
   2-12  declared December 19, 1993, as Aida Garza Day in her honor; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, Throughout her many endeavors, she has enjoyed the
   2-14  love and support of her husband, Dennis Garza, and the couple's
   2-15  three fine children, Ricardo Garza, Rebecca Flanigan, and Araceli
   2-16  Garza; in recent years, their family has grown to include two
   2-17  beautiful grandchildren, Christina and Regina Flanigan; and
   2-18        WHEREAS, Mrs. Garza has set an inspiring example of
   2-19  leadership and professional excellence throughout her career, and
   2-20  her manifest dedication to the youth of this state truly merits our
   2-21  highest praise and recognition; now, therefore, be it
   2-22        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-23  Legislature hereby commend Aida Laurel Garza for her outstanding
   2-24  contributions to the Laredo Independent School District and extend
   2-25  to her best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement; and, be it
   2-26  further
   2-27        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-1  prepared for Mrs. Garza as an expression of high regard by the
    3-2  Texas House of Representatives.
