H.R. No. 40 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, January 31, 1995, marks the 170th anniversary of the 1-2 birth of John Jolly, the noted Texas pioneer after whom the city of 1-3 Jollyville is named; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born January 31, 1825, in Tennessee, Mr. Jolly took 1-5 as his wife the former Nancy Guill, and this enterprising young 1-6 couple sought a brighter future in Texas, relocating to Travis 1-7 County in 1852; and 1-8 WHEREAS, He displayed exceptional valor as a member of the 1-9 Travis Mounted Rifles in the Confederate Army, in which he served 1-10 with distinction from 1861 to 1865; and 1-11 WHEREAS, After the Civil War he established a new home for 1-12 his family, building a log cabin near the border between Travis and 1-13 Williamson counties; the Jolly homestead became the nucleus for the 1-14 development of the area now occupied by the city of Jollyville; and 1-15 WHEREAS, A master blacksmith, he used his considerable skills 1-16 to construct and operate a blacksmith shop and store, providing a 1-17 much-needed service to area residents; and 1-18 WHEREAS, As civic-minded as he was industrious, Mr. Jolly 1-19 donated land for the Jollyville School and the Jolly Cemetery, 1-20 where he and his wife Nancy were laid to rest; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Mr. Jolly was a devoted husband and father, and he 1-22 tirelessly fought the rigorous demands of frontier life to forge a 1-23 better life for his wife and six daughters; and 1-24 WHEREAS, A true pioneer, this remarkable individual was at 2-1 various times a soldier, blacksmith, storekeeper, and patriarch, 2-2 and it is indeed appropriate that his many accomplishments be given 2-3 special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-5 Legislature hereby acknowledge the significant contributions of 2-6 John Jolly to the history of our state and join the proud residents 2-7 of Jollyville in commemorating the 170th anniversary of his birth.
