                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Maudrie M. Walton is a remarkable educator whose
    1-2  myriad contributions to the field of public education in Texas as a
    1-3  teacher, administrator, and school board trustee have spanned
    1-4  nearly six decades of service; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, A resident of Fort Worth since the age of seven,
    1-6  Mrs. Walton was graduated from I. M. Terrell High School and had
    1-7  obtained a temporary teaching certificate from Texas College in
    1-8  Tyler when she first began teaching in Fort Worth elementary
    1-9  schools at the age of 18; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Continuing her studies at Bishop College in
   1-11  Marshall, she earned her permanent teaching certificate and
   1-12  bachelor's degree in 1942 and a master's degree from Teachers
   1-13  College at Columbia University in New York City in 1950;
   1-14  Mrs. Walton also undertook course work in her chosen field of study
   1-15  at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and the University of
   1-16  Colorado at Boulder; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, During World War II, this patriotic citizen
   1-18  interrupted her teaching career to serve in the Women's Army Corps
   1-19  and was stationed in Des Moines, Iowa, where she taught basic
   1-20  skills to recruits, and in Chicago, where she served with a
   1-21  hospital detachment; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Following her military service, she resumed her
   1-23  teaching career in Fort Worth and soon moved into the field of
   1-24  administration when she was named principal of Rosedale Park
    2-1  Elementary School at a time when the school was no more than a set
    2-2  of temporary buildings; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, Throughout many years of service as an administrator
    2-4  and teacher, Mrs. Walton exemplified the finest qualities of her
    2-5  profession and, one year after her retirement in 1974, she was
    2-6  honored by the district and area citizens when Rosedale Park
    2-7  Elementary School was renamed in her honor; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, Committed to helping every child receive the best
    2-9  education possible in a wholesome environment, Mrs. Walton won the
   2-10  community's first single-member district school board election in
   2-11  1978 and was rewarded for her unwavering dedication and drive when
   2-12  she was reelected for two additional four-year terms in 1982 and
   2-13  1986; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, This dedicated civic leader also has shared her
   2-15  considerable knowledge and expertise to the benefit of others in
   2-16  the community as an active member of Greater Saint James Baptist
   2-17  Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Ethel Ransom Cultural Club,
   2-18  and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People;
   2-19  and
   2-20        WHEREAS, Maudrie Walton is a rare individual who gives back
   2-21  to the world much more than she asks of it; her caring attitude and
   2-22  diligence have made the world around her a measurably better place
   2-23  in which to rear and educate children, and she has earned the
   2-24  lasting respect and admiration of the citizens of the Fort Worth
   2-25  Independent School District for her valuable service; now,
   2-26  therefore, be it
   2-27        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
    3-1  Legislature hereby congratulate Maudrie M. Walton on her
    3-2  exceptional 12-year tenure as a member of the Fort Worth Board of
    3-3  Education and 47 years as an educator and administrator and commend
    3-4  her for the extraordinary contributions she has made to the field
    3-5  of public education in Texas; and, be it further
    3-6        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-7  prepared for Mrs. Walton as an expression of high regard by the
    3-8  Texas House of Representatives.
